대다수 의 사람들은 아마 주저하지 않고
GROUND ZERO (그라운드 제로) 의 Bboy BEBE(베베)
를 손 꼽을 것이다.상대방 을 잡아먹을듯한 강렬한
기세로 배틀을 펼치는 그 의 모습에 대다수 의 사람들은
야유를 보낼정도로 베베 와 그 의 크루 그라운드제로 는
2000년 초반 현시대 의 비보잉신 에서 보기 드물었던
모습을 자주 연출하였다.
그런 그가 KoreanRoc.com 을 통하여
새로 시작하는 어린친구들 그리고 2000년 이후
많은 미디어 와 언론에 노출된 비보잉신을 접하며
비보잉을시작한 댄서들에게 조언의 글을 써주었다.

can you write us your definition of a battle? 당신에게 있어서 배틀 을 정의하자면?
BEBE
A battle is an energetic experience of psychic dance combat shared
by opposing sides dueling for control of the Vortex(THE CIRCLE).
Your presence is your primary defense mechanism in the sense
that it(your aura) sets the tone for things to follow.
If you carry yourself with confidence you will survive,
if you show the least bit of weakness you will be EATEN. 배틀이란 힘있고 정신적인 춤으로 상대방과 circle의
주도권을 잡기 위한 전투이다. 너의 존재가 바로 너의 방어막이며
분위기를 주도 할 수도 있다.
자신감이 넘친다면 이기는 것이고 약간의 약점이라도 보이면
상대방에게 먹힐 수도 있다!
A serious battler expereinces a state of heightened awareness.
Keeping his eyes on his(her) opponent.Moves are directed
at and on your opponent. 배틀 을 진지하게 받아들이는 사람은 상대방에 대한 경계심이
극에 다했다는 걸 느낀다. 상대방의 눈을 항상 주시하고
무브 를 할 때는 꼭 상대방을 향해서 한다.
The goal is to annihilate your opponent. There are many weapons and
tools as well as a broad stream of approaches to achieve this.
It is important to look at a battle with a strategic approach or in
other words to use your strengths to exploit your opponents weaknesess.
One thing I think many bboys now in this NEW generation are lacking is the
essential experience of REAL RAW CIRCLE BATTLING.
Its so hard to expereince this now cus the enviorments dont
nurture such things anymore, they are far too preoccupied
with contest agendas for anything organic to grow in it. 배틀의 목적은 상대방을 괴멸시키는 것이다. 배틀을 잘하기 위해서는
도구와 무기도 있겠지만 ( 무브를 얘기하는듯) 배틀 이 란걸 어떻게
받아 들이느냐 도 중요하다.
내가 가진 힘으로 상대방의 약점을 찾아 내는 것이다.
내가 느끼기에는 요즘의 Breaker들은 진정한 Raw circle battle을
많이 경험해보지 못한 것 같다.
경험하기 힘든 이유는 주변 환경이 이런 분위기를
조성해주지도 않고 개개인이 대회위주로 생각하기 때문이다.
First of all most people have no idea what a real battle is,
all they have to judge by is Contests.
Competitions are artificial battles, REAL battles happen in circles.
However when the Competition BOOM happend(late 90's till present day)
dancing in circles became a rarity the focus was now shifted into
a controlled enviorment.Its controlled because wether you feel like dancing
or not whether you like the song or not have you have no choice
in the matter you have to conform and enter a battle
you have to play by THIER rules. 첫 번째 로, 대다수의 사람들이 진정한 배틀 이란 무엇인지를 모르고
대회를 통해서만 평가한다. 대회란 인공적인 배틀 이고 진정한 배틀 은
서클에서 이루어진다. 하지만 90년대 후반부터 지금까지 대회 붐이 일어났고
서클에서 춤을 추는 것은 보기가 힘들어지고
분위기 자체가 지배당하는 느낌이 든다.
춤을 추고 싶던 아니던 음악이 좋던 아니던
배틀 을 참가하게 되면 대회의 배틀 법칙을 따라가게 되기 때문이다.
This means that the whole situation is now very contrived.
ALL this 1-3 round nonsense is kids games im talking bout real batttling
here to the death not that it need extend too long just that there are
no restaraints in its original FREE enviorment.It is due to this enviorment
that many new b-boys decided to start I would venture to say most
new millenium bboys were first introduced to the ART FORM
in the unatural or Competition setting.This becomes very dangerous
artisically for the new cat trying to break beacause now the motives are
harshly askew. The goal becomes winning the contest ,
hence this is why we have everyone out there doing the same generic
material over and over again. They are soooooo stuck on biting moves
they dont even realize they are BITING. Things are way more politcally
correct now so long gone are the days when cats would staright laugh you
out the circle.Infact this UNoriginality is encouraged,
Breakin has thus become who can do the same move Longer
or stick it harder or spin more. ABSURD!!!! This is not monkey games,
but somewhere in the midst of the popularization of Contests
WE lost our way and stopped EDUCATING the NEW Generation.
Certainly when I was young I asked the OG'S for advice and
my predecessors as well as the crowd showed me biting was wrong. 내가 말하고자 하는 건 1~3라운드인 애들 장난 같은 배틀은
부자연스럽고 인공적이라는 것이다. 진정한 배틀은
감정을 억누르는 것 없이 한명 이 죽을때까지 하는 배틀을 말하는 것이다.
지금의 환경 때문에 많은 새로운 Breaker들이 Breaking을 시작을 했다.
2000년 이후에 시작한 대부분의 Breaker들은 이런 부자연스러운
대회장 환경에 익숙해져 있다. 새로 춤을 시작하는 사람들에게는
이건 정말로 위험한 것이다. 동기부여 라는게 없기 때문이다.
목적은 대회를 우승하는 것이 되어버리고 그래서 지금 대다수의 사람들이
각자의 개성없이 다들 비슷비슷한 동작들을 하는 것이다.
그들은 Bite하는 것에 너무나도 익숙해서 자기들이 Bite하고 있다고
느끼지도 못한다.
지금은 ‘정치적’으로 너무나도 잘 이끌려와서 서클에서 비웃음 당하는
옛날 같은 일들은 없다(풍자하는 것이죠)
이런 오리지날리티는 없게 되어버린 Breaking은 누가더 오래 버티고
누가 더 많이 도는 걸로 변해버렸다….이건 정말 어처구니없는 것이다!
이건 원숭이들이 하는 것도 아니고 대회라는 신개념이 생겨버려서
새로운 시대의 Breaker들에게 진정한 것이 무엇인지를 가르쳐
주지도 못하게 되었다. 내가 어렸을 때는 OG( Old Generation)들과
선배들에게 직접 물어봤었고 관중들이
나에게 Bite는 잘못된 것이라는걸 가르쳐 주었다.
Originality got replaced by ABILITY, thats right no one cares anymore
whos material is authentic and who is just being TRENDY as long as
you can execute you get props least from the peanut gallery and
you can certainley win contests like this as some judges don't even
acknowledge this aspect anymore. Nor are capable
of filtering out crowd noise
that influences the verdict making there presence pointless.
The only thing that has helped Hip-Hop endure over the years
is the SKILLS not the fashion or fluff all that is just icing on the cake.
This game is and always has been about skills.
Now why would you want to look like someone else?
When you are perfectly unique and fine the way you are. 오리지날리티 는 능력에 밀려 버렸다.
아무도 신경 쓰지 않는다 누가 진짜이고 누구는 트렌드 만 따라가던
잘 보여주기만 하면 호응을 얻고 배틀 에서도 이러면 쉽게 이기는 게
심사위원들도 오리지날 적인걸 보지 않기 때문이다.
심사위원들은 관중의 호응에 따라 판결하게 되고
그걸 제어 해야 하는데도 잘 못한다. Hip-Hop이 발전하는 이유는
스킬 때문이지 패션이나 다른 것 때문은 아니다.
이 문화는 언제나 그리고 지금도 스킬 이 먼저다.
다들 자기만의 독특하고 세련된 감각이 있는데
왜 다들 남처럼 하고 싶어 하는 걸 까?
You can Take many different paths in Breakin depending on
what you want to do, but in terms of becoming an effective battler you
need high impact or what is now reffered to as Blow Ups,
we used to call em Booyas! Now this does not mean that you use
everyone elses blow ups i.e. using tired allready
well treaded ..s and concepts. Instead YOU design your own WEAPONS
your Body is a weapon and with your natural gifts
that you have been bestowed with by the Grace of the Creator,
YOU CREATE!
Me and my crew at first used an Old School and
very traditional sense of this called Burns back then as
I learned to call them or Disses this all co-related with an
aspect of breakin reffered to as Character or Flava.
The idea here is ORIGINALITY invent your own attacks. Breaking을 하면서 하고자 하는 것에 따라서 길은 많은데
배틀 을 잘하고 싶으면 블로우업 이 필요하다.
우리는 블로우 업 을 예전에는 Booyas!라고 불렀다.
남의 것을 따라하지 말고 자기가 자신만의 무기를 디자인하는 것이다.
너의 몸이 무기이고 창조물에 우리에게 준 선물인 개개인의 능력으로…
창조해라!
내 크루 는 예전에 올드스쿨 적 이고 가장 전통적인 동작인 Burn과
상대방을 Diss를 많이 했는데 이것도 다 Breaking에 있어서는
캐릭터와 Flava 에 관련되어 있는 것이다.
말하고자 하는 것은 오리지날리티 이다!
너만의 공격을 만들어라!
Now Burns are just using freezes as attacks and im not talking
bout nu-skool freezes but they can be burns too.
However Burns were more as I understood it using a rythym to
eventually fall into a freeze or a point of impact rather.
Granted you must broaden yourself to other ideas
endevouring to become complete.
Ultimatley finding much fufilment in what you have produced
or came up with from hours of practice and imagination. Burn은 프리즈를 이용해서 공격을 하는 것인데
내가 말하는 것은 New Skool 프리즈 들 이 아니지만
그것들로도 Burn할수 있다. Burn은 리듬을 타다가 그 리듬에 맞추어
임팩트 부분에 딱 프리즈를 하는…시야와 관점을 넓혀야지만
완벽해 질 수 있다. 많은 시간 연습을 하고 상상을 하여 나온 것 들을
하면서 만족 할 수 있어야 한다.
How bout that hardly anyone makes there own moves anymore,
they get good at air flares and air babys and roll backs and hand hops
and oh yes air chairs, ridiculous!!!! GET OFF OF THE TRENDS!!!!!
they willl not serve you in finding yourself and your ability to execute
them well will only further the delusion that your getting better
when your only becoming a better BITER.
Now this advice goes for those who wish to become
ELITE AND UNIQUE if you wish to settle for whats allready out there
then carry on as you may, but i get alot of new kids nowadays
asking me "how do i become creative?"
and questions of the such the above will hopefully help those seeking
the narrow path of an artist.It should be noted that obviously
the percentage of artists or contributors to the dance are few and
perhaps its allways been this way. 요즘은 대다수가 오리지날리티 가 없고 에어트랙이나 에어베이비,
체어, 핸드합등… 다른 게 없다! 트랜드 에서 벗어 나야 한다!
너 자신을 찾는 일에나 전혀 도움이 안되고 오히려 Biter라는
소리만 듣게 해준다. 정말 잘하고 싶은 사람들을 위해 말한다.
새로 시작하는 사람들이 나에게 자주 묻는 게
“ 어떻게 해야 창의적이 될수 있나요?’
내가 위에서 말한 것들이 모든 사람들에게 도움이 되었으면 한다.
현실적으로 아티스트라고 할 수 있는 사람들은 적고 항상 이래왔다.
It is here that
ORIGINALITY
(a HUGE PART OF WHAT EVERYONE CALLS FOUNDATION)
and in my opinion one of the most important if not the most important
aspect of this CRAFT this is where you project yourself as an
artist as YOUR OWN INDIVIDUALITY your essential TRUE IDENTITY.
This all happens from the solar plexus
(between your navel and your heart this is where your Warrior
strength comes from.Durring a battle your fighting with all
your spirit and it is this subtle force that moves your physical form. 오리지날리티 는(파운데이션의 큰 부분을 차지한다)
가장 중요하고 자신에 개인성과 자신의 모습을 뚜렷하게 보여줄수 있다.
배꼽과 심장 사이에 있는 solar plexus 에서 힘이 나오는데
배틀을 할 때 모든 정신을 모아서 하고 희미한 에너지가 몸을 움직이게 한다.

There are lot of people that hate your battle style .
For reasons like it is not manner,
but I don't have no bad feelings or anything with your battle more over
I think a battle should be done your way.
당신의 배틀 스타일을 싫어하는 사람들이 많다.
예를 들자면 매너가 없어 보인다는 것이다.
하지만 개인적으로는 당신의 배틀 스타일이 진정한 배틀 스타일인 것 같다.

My Crew and I stepped to the scene with enthusiasm and a
fierce passion for battle innovating many tecknics to win in battle,
including team work ,routines,strategy,and intimidation.
Pushing the envelope inspiring many younger battlers to follow.
I think people couldn't handle at first the intensity and RAWNESS
I was coming with, in some of my battles you mentioned there was
a back story of beef and a reason to battle like that. 나와 내 크루 는 비보잉 씬에 배틀 을 향한 엄청난 열정으로 시작했고
많은 스킬들 을 업그레이드 시켜서 이기려 했다.
팀워크, 루틴, 전력 그리고 위협도 있다. 많은 어린 친구들에게 영향을 주었다.
나의 rawness를 사람들이 이해를 못했다고 보고
몇몇 배틀 에서는 비하인드 스토리가 있어서
매너 없게 배틀 을 한적도 있다.
I don't battle everyone the same it depends on the situation
the motive and the opponent. Everytime I battle its different the
2 you just mentioned mostly went down around 2001
I was young mean and my crew were blowing up and
thas what i battled like then.
I always have that fundamental
RAW and aggressive approach its just that
now it takes more to bring that out of me. 나는 항상 배틀 을 똑같이 하지 않고 상황과 동기와 상대방에 따라 다르다.
너가 말한 배틀들은 대부분 2001년도에 있었고 그때는 어리고 성질이 더러웠고
우리 크루 가 유명해지고 있을 때여서 그랬다.
나는 항상 Raw함과 과격하게 밀어붙인다.
그렇게 되려면 이제는 쉽지 않을 것이다.

In cyphers or floor exspecially when you were battling
with Lil John, Benji and many other bboys your style was the best. 싸이퍼 엿 던지 플로어 에서 던지 간에 릴존 과 벤지 와
배틀 을 할 때 최고였던 것 같다.

Thank you im glad you enjoyed my battles Like i said these match ups
that you mentioned took at place at a time of rivalry and rise for me.
There was a story behind it so it came out intense.
I think now in retrospect people kids watch videos and they make
judgements off of battles natrually ,
they think im a like a mean person whos gonna go crazy on them.
Then they meet me and see how I really am,
we got hated on ALOT because we were one of the first to step
in the scene with a crazy battle attitude so of cousre cats were
hating cus we were smokin people and had an aggressive swagger as well.
We were ahead of our time creatively and had confident attitudes
even intimidating at times naturally an opposition was created.
Benji for example i need not go into the history of which
im sure every one is aware but it was heated because of this.
Same with Lil John these are all very old and when
you watch more recent footage you can see how my battle style
changes over the years as does everything else. 고맙다! 내가 한 배틀들을 좋아해서 말이다.
그때 당시에 나는 그 두사람과 라이벌적인 상태였고 비하인드 스토리가
있어서 팽팽했던 것 같다. 요즘에는 영상이나 비디오를 보면서
자연스럽게 배틀하는 사람들을 심사하게 되는데 그런 사람들이
나를 보면 정말 성질 나쁜 사람인줄 안다.
그렇다가 나를 직접 만나보고는 그렇게 생각을 안 하더라.
우리 크루 는 정말 안티가 많았던 이유중 에 하나가 배틀 스타일이 정말 과격해서,
그리고 우리의 배틀 스타일은 거의 우리가 최초였을 것이다.
우리가 또 다 스모크하고 다니니까 그런 이유도 있을 것이다.
우리는 그 시대보다 앞서 있었고 자신감도 넘치다 보니까 배틀할 때
위협을 할 때 도 있다보니 우리를 싫어하는 사람들이 생긴 것이다.
벤지를 예로 들면…다들 알 것 이라고 믿지만
우리 크루가 과격한 스타일이다 보니까 그렇게 된 것 같다.
릴존 도 똑같고 말이다.
최근 영상들을 보면 나의 배틀 스타일이 변햇다 는 것을 느낄 수 있을 것이다.

Being polarized too far in any direction is no good,i.e.
dont be overly nu-skool or overly old skool there 2 sides of the same coin.
Find the middle route.I think the most important advice
I can give is be yourself and have fun with this.
It is by great grace that we all get to share this art-form and participate
in the molding of its history practice it with reverence.
Learn what you can from those before you there are several
different heads with different philosophies use what's right for you.
Its not just about winning contests cus all that is fleeting the
real glory is in your contributions to the art form by becoming
an artist and seeing your contributions in your self and others.
Knowledge Knowledge Knowledge 너무많은 길을 택하려 하면 안된다. 예를 들자면
너무 New-Skool이여도 안돼고 너무 Old-Skool 이여도 안된다.
중간이 최고이다! 가장 중요한 조언을 하자면
너 자신을 찾고 너자신에 충실하고 춤을 즐겨라! 모두가 이 예술을 즐길수 있다는 것이
바로 축복받은 것이고 존경하는 마음으로 임해야 한다.
너보다 먼저 시작한 사람들에게서 배우고 다들 자기만의 철학이 있으니
너에 맞는 사람에게 가서 배워라. 대회를 이기는 것만이 전부는 아니고
이 예술에 몸담으면서 너 자신도 아티스트가 되어서
너 자신을 찾고 남들도 도와야 한다.

배틀이나 대회에 관한것 ,조금씩 변하는것들.. 마음가짐 등 몇가지 정말 중요한점을 지적해 주지 않았나 싶네요 . 모두들 조금씩 알고는 있지만 잊기 쉬운것들말이죠..
하하.영상에 나오는대로 룰을 지키지 않아서 그라운드제로 는 몰수패 를 당했지요.
베베 에게 그당시 그라운드제로 의 심정을 듣게되었는데요.당시 4강전이 시작되기전부터
행사장 안에는 있던 관중들 대부분이 프로젝트코리아 의 엄청난 팬 들이었다고 합니다.
흡사 자신들이 wwe 레슬링 에서 악역 캐릭터 를 맡은듯한 착각이 들 정도였다고 하더라구요.하하
그래서 더욱더 자신들의 배틀스타일 을 보여주다 그런 결과가 나왔다고 하며 그당시 기억을
추억으로 생각을 하더군요.정말로 한국뿐만 아니라 전세계 비보이들에게 전투적 배틀스타일
로서 큰 영향력을 행사하였던 베베락!! 그와의 앞으로의 교류 를 계속 기대해주십시요.
