자기자신을 간략하게 소개해주세요. NESS: My name is Alien Ness aka Rusty Shank Aka Ness4; Mighty Zulu Kingz, Breaklife. 내 이름은 Alien Ness aka Rusty Shank Aka Ness4이고 Mighty Zulu Kingz, 그리고 breaklife에 몸담고 있다.
KOREAN ROC: When did you start to Break? 춤을 언제부터 추기 시작했는가? NESS: I started Breaking in November of 1982, but I started to really taking it serious after I have seen Rock Steady Crew in Flash Dance, before that, I was just doing it because my friends where doing it. But when I saw Flash Dance, it was something about Frosty Freeze that really moved me because he was totally different than anyone that I have seen. When I saw that I thought, “Okay, I can look different and still be in the game.” Shoutouts to Frosty Freeze I love you! Without you, there is no me! 1982년 11월 달부터 춤을 추기 시작했고, Flash Dance에 나오는 RSC를 보고 난 후에야 좀더 춤에 대해서 진지하게 생각 하게 되었다. RSC를 보기 전에는 그냥 친구들이 추니까 같이 따라 하는 것밖에는 되지 않았었다. RSC의 Frosty Freeze는 달라 보였다.. 내가 본 사람들과는 너무 달랐고 그를 본 순간 나는 “나도 달라 보이면서 계속 Breaking 씬에 있을 수 있겠다” 라고 생각했다. Frosty Freeze! 사랑합니다! 당신이 없었으면 나 또한 없었을 것입니다!
KOREAN ROC: How was the Breaking scene when you started?
그때 당시에 Breaking 씬은 어땠나요?
NESS: You got to remember that I’m a 3rd generation B-Boy. I like to joke around and call my generation the ‘bandwagon generation’ because my generation b-boys jumped on the bandwagon when the 2nd generation b-boys made breaking popular. The 2nd generation b-boys are the ones that were inspired by the real original b-boys, people like Crazy Legs, Ken Swift, Frosty Freeze and more, they were inspired by the real original b-boys, in a real jam when my generation b-boys were inspired by TV and movies, so I like to joke around that we are the ‘bandwagon generation.’ It was different back then, my generation was more about the party. Maybe you got lucky enough not to party, you got to Break. There was no such thing as friendly cyphers and friendly fires. If there was a b-boy in the house and you went down, it was on. I remember in 1998, I went to my first cypher of this generation and saw the first b-boy get down and I thought he was dope but didn’t show that I was thinking like that. He did something and the whole cypher started clapping and I was like….what the..? are these b-boys?? That was something new to me because I’ve never experienced something like that and it took me awhile to get used to what’s going on now. I like the directions taken.
기억해 야할 것은 내가 3세대 비보이라는 점이다. 나는 우리 세대에 대해서 장난을 치며 하는 말이, 우리는 편승 세대라는 것이다. 2세대들이 너무나도 인기를 불어왔기 때문에 우리는 그걸 등에 업은 것뿐이다. 2세대 비보이들은 1세대 비보이들, 즉 진짜, 오리지널 비보이들에게 영향을 받았다. 2세대 비보이들은 Crazy Legs, Ken Swift, Frosty Freeze 등등…… 우리 세대는 티브이나 영화에 영향을 받고 춤을 췄기 때문에 편승 세대라고 장난치는 것이다. 내 시대에는 파티가 대세였다. 파티문화에 빠지지 않았다면 분명히 Breaking을 하고 있었을 것이다. 싸이퍼에 친절함이란 없었다. 파티장에 비보이가 있고 네가 나가고 그 사람이 나가면, 바로 배틀 시작이다. 98년도에, 지금 세대들의 싸이퍼를 처음 봤는데 누군가가 나와서 춤을 추는데 잘하더라.. 하지만 내색은 하지 않았다. 그렇다가 무언가를 했는데 사람들이 박수를 쳐서 나는 “뭐지 이건? 이 사람들 Breaker들 맞아?” 라고 생각했다. 나에게는 새로울 수밖에 없고 이런 건 경험한 적도 없었기 대문이다. 하지만 그것이 나쁘다고는 생각지 않고 좋은 방향으로 흘러가고 있다고 생각한다.
KOREAN ROC: Can you tell us about the history about the Bronx B-boys?
Bronx B-boy의 역사에 대해서 말해달라.
NESS: Basically, Breaking has been around for awhile you know they say that it got inspired by James Brown, the Nicholas Brothers and stuff like that, but in 1975, something crazy happened. A B-Boy just blew up to the point where everybody in the city knew his name. That was the first time when anybody blew up and had that ghetto celebrity status and his name was Beaver from the Zulu Kings. In 1975, he was the one that started to B-Boy boom and inspired everybody to get into it and the next thing you know, Zulu Kings started to get popular and more crews started popping up here and there. Salsoul, starchild la rock, Crazy Commandos, the Nigga twinz, Rock Steady Crew, I’m really not the authority of saying their names that was out there, but that’s when all the crews started to come out and that lasted about good 4yrs; by 1979, Breaking was dead, played out. When Legs got the Rock Steady Crew, Legs continued, and started recruiting people, that the dance kept going. Basically, it was dead in 79, but RSC kept it alive; Crazy Legs, Frosty Freeze, Ken Swift, Lenny Len and more and eventually they ended up getting Buck 4 and Kuriaki, Doze, from the Young City Boyz, came in with Kenny. They really kept the dance alive and they got all the exposure because..they kept it alive! So when the documentary started coming out like ‘Style Wars,’ ‘Wild Style,’ started a big boom for the 3rd generation; cats like me, Poe One. But in the Bronx, it was always about the Crazy Commandos, Star child la rock, Salsoul, Zulu Kings and of course the Nigga twinz. The Nigga Twinz is just part of a big crew, but they just got the props because of the Kool Herc parties. But I was told by the Nigga Twinz themselves that they were part of a crew and that crew was called the ‘Bronx Boys,’ which is another first generation Bronx B-Boy crew! Batch was the leader and there were people like Abby?(정확한 이름의 스펠링을 모르겠습니다) who’s still around. TBB( The Bronx Boys) was dope which was big back then, and a matter of fact, TBB was the first crew Crazy Legs was in.
Breaking은 참 오래 되었다. 사람들은 James Brown, Nicholas Brothers와 같은 사람들에게 Breaking이 영향 받았다고도 하니 말이다. 하지만 1975년에 엄청난 일이 벌어졌다. 한 비보이가 너무나 유명해져서 한 도시에 사람들이 전부 그를 알 정도였다. 그런 일이 벌어진 건 처음이고 ghetto celebrity( 언더그라운드의 연예인 이라 보면된다.) 의 지휘까지 올라간 사람이 바로 Zulu Kings의 Beaver다. 그로 인해서 1975년에 B-Boy 붐이 시작됐고 Zulu Kings도 유명해졌고 그로 인해서 많은 크루들이 생겨났는데 Salsoul, starchild la rock, Crazy Commandos, the Nigga twinz, Rock Steady Crew 등이 그 크루들이다. 내가 이 크루들을 대표해서 말할 그럴 입장은 아니지만 그때가 이크루들이 나오고 대단하게 활동할 때이다. 하지만 4년밖에 가지 못했다. 1979년에는 Breaking은 죽었다. Crazy Leg가 RSC의 이름을 물려받고 나서 사람들을 등용하기 시작했고 그로 인해 RSC는 Breaking을 이어갈 수 있었다. Frosty Freeze, Lenny Len, Ken Swift, 그리고 Buck4, Kuriaki.그리고 Young City Breakers의 Doze는 Kenny와 들어 왔다. RSC가 춤을 이어왔고… Style Wars, Wild Style같은 다큐멘터리들이 나왔을 때는 다시 한번 Breaking 붐이 온 것이고 나, Poe One같은 제 3세대들의 시작이라 할 수 있는 시간이 온 것이었다. 하지만 Bronx에서는 , Crazy Commandos, Star Child La Rock, Salsoul, Zulu Kings 그리고 Nigga Twinz뿐이다. Nigga Twinz는 한 크루에 속해있는 두 명인데 Kool Herc의 파티 때문에 유명해 진 것 뿐이다. 나는 Nigga Twinz에게 직접 들은 바로의하면, 그들은 한 크루에 같이 속해있었고, 그 크루의 이름은 ‘The Bronx Boys’ 라는 크루인데 또다른 1세대 B-boy크루 이기도 하다. KOREAN ROC: Who were you influenced by?
누구에게 영향을 받았나.
NESS: Frosty Freeze is the brother that made me really want to dance. So, all props goes to Frosty Freeze. After that, Buck 4 from the RSC, R.I.P. He taught me a lot. Buck 4 introduced me to Mr. Freeze and he started teaching me, and Mr.Freeze introduced me to Track 2 and he taught me too, Track 2 introduced me to Little Len? He started teaching me, Little Lem introduced me to Action from New York City Breakers, he thought me, and introduced me to Powerful Pexter, he thought me and introduced me to Icey Ice, he started to teach me and those are all my teachers from the 80s. Everything I do on the floor, is a piece of them. Then on the 90s, I learned a lot from Crazy Legs, Pop Master Fable. Even though Pop Master Fable is a Popper and a Locker and a dope Rocker, he has mind of a B-Boy. A lot of my patent original moves were actually created by Pop Master Fable, he came up with a lot of dope moves for me and his concepts of styles. Now in the new generation in my comeback era, my inspirations were Crazy Leg, Pop Master Fable, Ken Swift, Fever 1, Seattle DVS crew and Freeze from Ghost crew. Freeze from the Ghost crew is the one that really made me get on my shit. Because when I came back in 1998, I was immediately embraced by the old guys and by 1999, I was down with the RSC and somebody showed me a video clip of some battle and Freeze was in it and I liked the way Freeze moved and I said “this cat you know, you can tell that he’s got a strong foundation.” And people around me said, “you he’s only 4yrs younger than you” and I was like “yo you serious?” and they were like Yeah! So I said, “he’s that old and he’s out there battling?” and said, “you know what, then I’m doing the wrong thing!” Here I’m thinking that I’m too old to battle and I’m happy with my position in the RSC performing and doing this and that but Freeze, he was in to battles. Then I recognized Poe One, which was one of my generations and he was making a noise with the Style Elements. So those are the two brothers that really inspired me to start battling. Now, I’m inspired by the new generation, everybody that I have ever taught inspires me. I don’t say that I’m gonna teach it to you, I’m gonna show it to you. You do what you think you saw me do. I saw couple of people coming up with their own stuff and that was inspiring to me because the things that I do can still be flipped. As for of inspiration, I have way too much haha.
Frosty Freeze가 내가 춤을 추게 만든 장본인이다. 그 이후에는 RSC 의 Buck 4..고인의 명복을 빕니다! Buck4가 Mr.Freeze를 소개 시켜주었고, 그가 날 가르쳐주었고..Mr. Freeze가 Track 2를 소개시켜주었고 또 그에게서도 배우고.. Track 2는 Little Len을 소개시켜주었고 그에게서도 배우고……그 다음은 NYC Breakers의 Action, 그 다음은 Powerful Pexter, 그다음은 Icey Ice…80년대에 나의 스승들이다. 내가 춤을 출 때 보면 그들 하나하나가 모인 게 나라고 생각하면 된다. 90년대에는 Crazy Legs, Pop Master Fable. Pop Master Fable은 Popping과 Locking 그리고 Rocking을 하지만 생각하는 것만큼은 B-Boy이다. 내가 특허를 낸 많은 오리지널 무브들은 Pop Master Fable이 만든 것들이다. 그는 무브들만이 아닌 캐럭터 적인 면이나 개념적인 면에서도 나에게 많은 영향을 주었다. 새로운 시대, 내가 돌아온 시대에 나에게 영감을 준 사람들은 Crazy Legs, Pop Master Fable, Ken Swift, Fever 1, 씨에틀에 DVS Crew, 그리고 Ghost Crew의 Freeze이다. Freeze가 내가 다시 배틀을 하는데 정말 많은 영향을 주었다. 내가 1998년에 돌아왔을 때, 선배들로부터 받아들여졌고 1999년에는 RSC에 들어갔다. 그런데 한 배틀 영상을 보는데 거기에 Freeze가 나왔다. 나는 Freeze의 움직임이 맘에 들었고 내가 한말이 “ 이사람 보면 탄탄한 Foundation을 가지고 있다는 걸 딱 알 수 있네” 라고 말했더니 옆에 있던 사람이 “ 그 사람 당신보다 4살밖에 어리지 않아~” 라고 했고 나는 믿을 수 없었다. 나보다 4살밖에 어리지 않은데 아직도 배틀을 하고 있다니 말이다. 나는 그때 RSC에 들어가서 쇼도 하고 이것저것 다해보면서 내 자리에 만족하며 나는 배틀하기에는 너무 늙었다 라고 생각했는데 충격이 아닐 수 없었다. 그리고 내 세대의 또 한명인 Poe One도 Style Elements crew에서 엄청난 상승세를 보이고 있었다. 그 두명이 내가 다시금 배틀을 할 수 있게 영향을 준 사람들이다. 지금은 새 세대 에게 영향을 받는다. 내가 가르친 모든 사람들에게서 영향을 받는다. 나는 사람들에게 가르쳐주겠다고 하지 않는다, 보여주겠다고 한다. ‘내가 한 게 뭔지 네가 봤다고 느낀 대로로 따라 해봐라’이다. 많은 사람들이 내가 보여준걸 따라 해서 자기만의 것을 하는 것을 보고 영향을 받는다. 왜냐하면 내가 할 줄 아는 게 아직 무한대로 바뀔 수 있다는 것이기 때문이다. 휴 너무 많은 사람들한테 영향을 받아서 말하기도 힘들다 하하!

KOREAN ROC: Tell us about the history of the Zulu Kings.
Zulu Kings의 역사에 대해 말해달라!
NESS: Basically I will break it down, in 1973 Bambaataa united the gangs, created Zulu nation, the five brothers that helped Bam creating the zulu nation were B-boys in their own right and they wanted their own identity and they came up with the name zulu kings. They recruited people and eventually they got people like Robby Rob, Beaver and more. Beaver had lighting fast footwork and the first B-boy to get ghetto celebrity status. Robby Rob, first B-boy to do a chair freeze, which is actually the first freeze in Breaking, before that, people was just spinning up. The whole Soul Sonic Force, they were either Breaking or popping. Pow Wow was a dope Breaker. The thing I like the most about Pow Wow was his tops. What Pow Wow was doing back then is what people are trying to do now. The first time when I saw Michael Jackson do the kick, I was like, “he bited that from Pow Wow.” He has this certain stalls and I can’t do them but I do a spin and do what Pow Wow did and bring it back down. Zulu Kings brought a lot of stuff into the game just like a lot of the Crazy Commandos brought a lot of stuff into the game. Basically, the B-Boy foundation comes from people like Spy, Mango, Weebles, Track 2, Jojo, Jimmy dee and that’s the real foundation but Zulu kings is the ones that brought the crazy flavor, crazy spins, and crazy blow ups. Zulu Kings died in like 1979, and then in 1981 and 1982 I believe, Frosty Freeze and Crazy Legs asked Bam to be down with Zulu Nation, and what Bam did was give RSC the zulu Kings. so then RSC is the first crew to revise the Zulu Kings. If you look at the pictures taken back then, you can see RSC holding up shirts that says RSC Zulu Kings . Fable always wears gears that says RSC Zulu Kings until now. There were other B-boys that were put down into the Zulu Kings by Bam, and even though they don’t rep zulu Kings hard, I still acknowledge them as Zulu Kings. For instance, during the Beat street tours, Bam made NYC Breakers Zulu Kings; they didn’t rep Zulu Kings hard but it is a little known fact that all of the members of the NYC Breakers are Zulu Kings. In 2000, Bam told me to bring back the Zulu Kings and I’ve been doing it since.

Soul Sonic Force(Planet Rock이란 노래로 우리에게 친근한..)의 멤버들 모두가 Breaking아니면 Popping을 했었다. 그 중에 PoW Wow는 Breaking을 정말 잘했는데 그의 Top rock은 지금 시대의 사람들이 하려고 하는 모습을 옛날부터 했었다. 마이클 잭슨이 발차기를 하는걸 보았을 때 나는 마이클 잭슨이 Pow Wow를 배꼇다고 생각했었다. Pow wow는 그만의 자세가 있었는데 나는 제대로 따라 하지 못하지만 나 같은 경우에는 한번 스핀을 하고 Pow Wow가 하는 킥을 하면서 위로 올라갔다가 다시 내려오면서 탑락을 하는 게 있다. Crazy Commandos가 Breaking scene에 영향을 많이 끼쳤듯이 Zulu Kings도 정말 많은 영향을 끼쳤다. B-Boy Foundation은 Spy, Mango, Weebles, Track 2, Jojo, Jimmy dee 등등으로부터 나왔지만 Zulu Kings는 Crazy한 Flavor와 Crazy한 spin, 그리고 crazy 한 blow up으로 영향을 많이 끼쳤다. Zulu Kings가 죽은 건 1979년이다. 하지만 1981년과 1982년에 Frosty Freeze와 Crazy Leg가 Bam에게 Zulu Nation의 일원이 되고 싶다고 했는데 Bam은 RSC에게 Zulu Kings의 이름을 물려줬다. RSC는 Zulu Kings를 다시금 살려 놓은 첫 번째 크루이다. 옛날 사진 들을 보면 RSC멤버들이 티셔츠에 RSC와 Zulu Kings가 같이 써있는 티셔츠를 들고 있는 사진들이 몇 개 있었다. Pop Master Fable은 항상 RSC와 Zulu Kings가 같이 써있는 티셔츠를 아직도 입는다. Bam에 의해서 Zulu Kings가 된 B-Boy들도 있는데 그 사람들은 Zulu Kings라는 이름을 대표하진 않지만 Zulu Kings멤버라고 인정한다. 예를 들자면 Beat Street 투어를 할 때 Bam이 NYC Breaker전부를 Zulu Kings 멤버라고 인정했지만 그들은 그 이름을 대표하진 않았다. 하지만 많이 알지 못하는 사실이지만 그들 모두가 Zulu Kings 멤버이다. 2000년에 Bam이 나보고 Zulu Kings를 이끌라고 해서 그때부터 지금까지 계속 활동하고 있다.
KOREAN ROC: To my information you talked with Afrika Bambaataa in the year 2000 to bring back the Zulu Kingz and got the permission.
내가 알기론 당신은 2000년 초반 아프리카밤바타 와 이야기 끝에 줄루킹즈를 재건설 한다는 허락을 받고 줄루킹즈 를 다시 모으기 시작했다고 알고 있다.
NESS: No, I didn’t ask Bam, Bam asked me. I wouldn’t ask because I thought it was too much of a responsibility. When Bam asked me to do it, I was shocked and I was like “I can’t do it” and Bam said “yes you can, you take your man Cream and you go out and recruit. Just go out and do what I did with Zulu Nation, I got Zulu Nation chapter all over the world, and I want you to do Zulu Kingz chapter all over the world. Anywhere in the world, so when I go perform, I would be able to call you and tell you that I’m in somewhere and I need Zulu Kingz to perform.” That’s what I’ve been doing ever since.
내가 Bambaataa한테 말한 게 아니고 그 반대다. 나는 절대 물어보지 않았을 것이다 왜냐하면 너무나 큰 책임이기 때문이다. 그가 나에게 그렇게 말했을 때 나에게는 큰 쇼크였고 못할 것 같다고 말하니까 Bam이 “ 넌 할 수 있어. 내가 Zulu Nation을 만들었을 때처럼 하면 돼. Cream이랑 같이 사람들을 등용해! 지금 Zulu Nation을 대표하는 곳이 전세계적이야. 너도 똑같이 Zulu Kingz를 가지고 그렇게 해. 내가 어느 나라를 가서 공연을 할 때 그 나라의 Zulu Kingz 멤버들을 너에게 전화해서 말하면 바로 같이 함께 할 수 있게 말이야. 그래서 그때부터 그렇게 해왔다.
KOREAN ROC: about in the year 2000 you were doing great in the Rock Steady Crew. Was there any reason to come out of Rock Steady Crew and start Zulu Kings?
아 그렇다면, 2000년경 당신은 락스테이디크루 로 활발한 활동을 벌이고 있었다 그 와중에 왜 굳이 락스테이디 를 탈퇴하여 줄루킹즈 를 다시 만들 게 된 것이냐? 그 계기 나 이유를 말해달라.
NESS: I didn’t come out of RSC, they kicked me out. Then I brought back Zulu Kingz, and then I got back down with RSC. But Legs acknowledged that I’m president of the Zulu Kingz. Legs is a real cool brother in a way that, you see, his got members from Skill Methodz and members from Canadian crews and all types of stuff, so I was holding down Zulu Kingz and still holding down RSC, so it was hard to get RSC to battle Zulu Kingz; we really didn’t have a battle squad in those days. Later on in the future, they are saying about Rock Steady history but later on in the future there was something that inspired a battle squad for Rock Steady but you guys (Koreanroc) get into the Rock Steady and get that story. But at that time, I really wanted a battle squad because the only person I had was Fever 1; Fever was the only one that I could drag him out of the bed to battle with me. But I still had my Zulu Kingz with me and if I wanted to enter a crew battle, I enter with my Zulu Kingz; not super crew or not just with some guys that we put together. So it didn’t make any conflicts because at that time, Zulu Kingz was really just about keeping the name alive. It doesn’t matter who you are down with, but if you want to keep this name alive, it’s on like popcorn because Zulu Kingz is one of the most important names in Breaking. So basically we are just trying to keep the name alive. It wasn’t until I started to recruit people after watching them battle; that Zulu Kingz became a battle squad, which was dope, because it helps our mission even more to maintain the name alive. It’s dope that Zulu Kingz is at every battle now, doesn’t matter who you are with, doesn’t matter if we lose; we were there and we did what he we had to do.
내가 RSC나온 게 아니라 RSC에서 나를 내 쫓았다. 내가 Zulu Kingz를 대표하고 나서 다시 RSC에 들어갔다. Crazy Leg는 내가 Zulu Kingz의 대표임을 인식 해줬다. Crazy Leg는 정말 괜찮은 사람이다, 그의 크루에는 Skill Methodz 멤버들과, Canada의 몇몇 크루 멤버들과 등등이 섞여 있지 않은가. 그래서 나는 Zulu Kingz와 RSC를 함께 할 수 있었는데 그래서 RSC와 Zulu Kingz가 배틀 하기 힘들었던 것 이다. 그때 당시에는 배틀 할 멤버들이 없었다. 나중에 가서는 사람들이 RSC의 역사에 대해서만 말하는데 RSC는 배틀 스쿼드 를 만드는데 어떠한 영향을 받았는데 너희들 (Koreanroc)은 그 쪽 얘기만 안다. 하지만 그 당시에 나는 정말 배틀을 할 멤버들을 원했다. Fever 1뿐이 없었는데 Zulu Kingz는 항상 함께였다. 크루 배틀을 참가한다면 나는 Zulu Kingz와 함께다, 슈퍼크루도, 그냥 모인 크루도 아닌. 그때 당시에 문제가 전혀 없었던 게, 그때는 Zulu Kingz는 그 이름을 계속 이어나가자는 이유 였기 때문이다. 당신이 누구와 함께 하던 말이다. 하지만 이 이름을 계속 이어나가고 싶다면 쉽지 않을 것이다 왜냐하면 Zulu Kingz라는 이름은 Breaking이란 춤에 있어서는 가장 중요한 이름 중에 하나이기 때문이다. 간단하게 말하자면 우리는 Zulu Kingz라는 이름이 역사에 묻히지 않게 계속 이어나가려는 것이다. 하지만 Zulu Kingz에 들어오려면 배틀을 해야만 들어올 수 있다는 규칙이 생긴 후부터 배틀 스쿼드 가 되었다. 그래서 좋은 게 우리가 이름을 계속 이어 나가기 위하는데 더 도움이 되기 때문이다. Zulu Kingz가 모든 배틀에 참가 한다는 게 정말 좋다. 당신이 누구와 있든, 우리가 지든 상관없다, 우리는 그곳에 있었고 우리가 할 일을 다했기 때문이다.
KOREAN ROC: What influences did Zulu Kings give to the b-boying scene?
줄루킹즈 가 비보잉신 에 끼친 영향력은?
NESS: Of course like I have mentioned before, the whole B-Boying scene started with Zulu Kingz. You could watch the Freshest Kids and every old school B-Boy they interview, they will take it back to Zulu Kingz. So we already know that much. Now, if you take away the hate, I think Zulu Kingz really inspired the world to get more into the tradition of Breaking. If you look at the B-Boys nowadays, they are looking a lot like my lil’ niggaz. Before, it was only just us, keeping it alive like Track 2 shuffles, Little DXT Leg steps, Crazy Leg transitions, Ken Swift’s style; it was just us doing them. But since we started doing it, the whole world is like saying “yo! We are allowed to do it!” Now you see a lot more Foundation, rugged raw style. In the last 3yrs, how many crews popped up with the name Kingz in it? How many crews changed their names just to put the word ‘Kingz’ in it? Nuff said!
아까도 말했듯이, B-Boy 붐이 일어난건 Zulu Kingz 때문이다. Freshest Kidz를 봐도 답이 나오는 것이, 어떠한 옛날 B-Boy들을 인터뷰해도 그들이 하는 얘기에서 원점으로 돌아가면 Zulu Kingz 얘기가 나온다는 것이다. 만약에 우리를 싫어하는 감정을 뺀다면, Zulu Kingz는 전세계에 Breaking의 전통을 더 공부하는데 영향을 준 것 같다. 요즈음에 B-Boy들을 보면, Zulu Kingz 사람들 같다. 예전에는 Track 2 Shuffles, Little DXT Leg steps, Crazy Leg transitions, Ken Swifts style 을 유지해온 사람들은 우리 밖에 없었다. 우리가 하고 나서 사람들이 보고 “아! 우리도 해도 되겠다!” 라고 생각한 것 같다. 이제 보면 Foundation과 raw한 스타일을 예전보다 더 많이 볼 수 있다. 지난 3년간 새로 나온 크루 이름 중에 ‘Kingz’가 들어가는 크루가 얼마나 많은가? 또한 얼마나 많은 크루들이 이름을 ‘Kingz’를 넣으려고 바꿨는가? 더 이상 말할 필요가 없다.
KOREAN ROC: In one point there are too many Zulu Kingz members around the world. Therefore, there are opinions that it lacks as a crew. What do you think about this?
한편으론 줄루킹즈 의 멤버가 너무 전세계에 퍼져있어서 크루 적인 결속력 이 떨어진다는 의견도 있다 이것에 대해서는 어떻게 생각하나?
NESS: What’s too many? Too many for what? We have a really strong level of communication worldwide. For starters, let me just say one thing: a lot of people beef and talk about Zulu Kingz having members all over the world this and that, you know what? I don’t care what those people say. Bam is my father and I’m doing what my dad told me to do. He told me to build it up worldwide, I did that. But now, we are as tighter crew than ever. We maintain a level of communication. Benny Ben is in Korea and he takes part of the Zulu nation conference by his long distance calls into the Zulu nation conference calls because we have a Zulu nation conference calls. We all call in and it’s like we are chatting with each other and we are all there discussing things and we all build it. I got my Ness 4 forum, my website is down but the forum is still up and there is a private MZK section where only MZK members are authorized to go in there and we all build in there. We got myspace, emails, and telephones. Before, it was just all me but now I have a whole council. I got Tyquan off the top that helped to build Zulu Kingz to what it is right now. Because I’m busy trying to feed my family and going all over the world, Tyquan has been holding it down. Right by he’s side you got Floor Phantom, Poe One and Smurf; that’s my council right there. And then we got people that are part of the council that are in other parts of the world and we look at them as leaders. They are the ones we lay our messages to our people; in Korea I got Benny Ben, in Japan I got Bounce. Europe? I handle Europe because my European members are small. I got Xisco, Menno, Guassama, and four more in Spain which are, Max 1, ????, Psycho and B-Girl Jess. If you look at Europe, there are only 7 people in Europe and I handle that. Korea? There are only 4 people in Korea and Benny Ben handles that. Japan? There are few people in Japan and my man Bounce handles that. The whole Fresh Sox crew is Zulu Kingz and my man Mousa handles them. It’s just a matter of us connecting and the best part is that when we are together, we are a family. Look at the Freestyle session squad, we won the jam, and if you look at the squad, we had three brothers from the Bronx, two brothers from Ohio, two brothers from California and one guy from Japan. When we were upon that stage, we were one, a unit, we were tight and connected. So I don’t care what anybody says or thinks that we are not a crew. First, we are a movement because that’s what the Zulu Kingz was when Bam gave it to me; a movement. But within that movement, we got a crew and when we connect, we are a family. Born was just in the States and he was kicking it in with the vice president and chilling like they see each other everyday; building and learning from each other. My European squad? I’m always on the phone with them. I’ma have a European squad, maybe my representative of this years Evolution Europe. European squad already did their thing; Menno and Xisco just won Circle Kingz and Menno won UK Champs. We are a movement! Movement is to keep our name alive and the more people we have, the more people that will help to keep that name alive. But within that movement, we are a crew. Don’t even think that we are not a crew, and if you think that we are not a crew, come test us. You are gonna see million commandos and routines. Look how many routines Katsu from Japan was in at FSS. Every battle we need Katsu, and he flies to the states. FSS10, this August, we are going to have Katsu and Born on the squad. We are a crew and we are gonna be a crew forever. Ya’ll can hate all ya’ll want but we are going to be here forever. If you want to continue to hate, then you know what? You are going to take that hate with you into your grave.
너무 많은 건 뭔가? 뭘 위해서 많은 건가? 우리는 강한 연락망이 전세계적으로 형성 되어있다. 초보들에게……한마디만 하자, Zulu Kingz멤버들이 많은걸 가지고 뭐라 하는 사람들아…… 이것만 알아둬라.. 난 신경안쓴다! Bam이 우리 아버지와 같은 존재고 나는 그가 하라는 데로 했다. 나보고 Zulu Kingz를 만들라고 했고 그것에 성공했다. 지금 우리는 크루로서 더 똘똘 뭉쳤다. Benny Ben은 한국에 있는데도 Zulu Nation 회의에 국제전화로 참여한다. 왜냐하면 우리가 회의를 할 때는 여러 개의 전화가 있어서 채팅 방에서 채팅을 하는 것과도 같다. 그렇게 연락해서 서로 회의하고 상의하고 크루로서의 모든 것을 만들어간다. 내 Ness 4 게시판에, 사이트는 다운이지만 게시판은 살아있다, 그곳에 MZK멤버들만이 허가된 방이 따로 있어서 거기서도 서로 얘기를 주고 받는다. 그리고 myspace, 이 메일, 전화도 있다. 예전에는 나 혼자였고, 이제는 고문들도 있다. FSS에 나온 Zulu Kingz 멤버들을 봐라. 3명은 Bronx, 2명은 Ohio, 2명은 California 그리고 한 명은 일본에서 모였다. 우리가 그 스테이지 위에 올라갔을 때 우리는 하나였고 똘똘 뭉쳤었다. 그래서 남들이 뭐라 하던 우리가 크루가 아니다라고 해도 신경안쓴다. 첫째로, 우리는 하나의 움직임이다. 왜냐하면 Bam이 나에게 Zulu Kings를 물려주었을 때 그랬기 때문이다. 그 하나의 움직임 안에서 크루가 있고 우리는 한 가족이다. Born이 미국에 왔다 간지 얼마 안됐는데 그 때 Tyquan이랑 매일 만나던 사이처럼 같이 춤추고 놀고 서로 배우고…… 내 유럽 쪽 크루와는 항상 전화 통화를 한다. 이번 년도의 Evolution Europe에 Zulu Kingz Europe이 나갈 수도 있다. 유럽 쪽 멤버들, Xisco와 Menno는 이미 활동을 하고 있는 게 Circle Kingz를 우승했고 Menno는 UK Champs에서 우승했다. 우리는 하나의 움직임이다! 우리의 이름을 계속 이어나가는데 있어서 많은 사람이 있을수록 그 이름을 이어나가는데 도움이 된다! 그 움직임 안에서 우리는 하나의 크루이고 가족이다. 우리가 크루가 아니라고 생각지도 말라! 우리가 크루가 아니라고 생각된다면, 와서 시험 해봐라. 우리는 정말 많은 루틴과 코맨도가 있다. FSS 10주년에서 Katsu가 몇 개의 루틴이나 나왔는지 한번 봐라. 일본에 있고 우리는 미국에 있는데도 말이다. 우리가 배틀을 나가면 Katsu가 꼭 함께 해야 하고 그럴 때마다 항상 미국으로 온다. 이번 8월에 있을 FSS 10에서는 Katsu 와 Born이 우리와 함께 할 예정이다. 우리는 크루이고 영원할 것이다. 우리를 증오해도 된다 하지만 그 증오가 당신이 죽고 무덤까지 함께 할 것이다.
KOREAN ROC: What is the most important thing that Zulu Kingz keeps in mind or goal?
줄루킹즈가 가장 중요시하는 목표나 생각은 무엇인가?
NESS: Our mission, the Zulu Kingz statement is, to uphold and maintain the essence of Afrika Bambaataas original vision; that is our mission code. When I say Bam’s original vision, it’s the vision that Bam had when he created Zulu Nation. We maintain and uphold that but we are doing it as B-boys. That is our mission statement. Our goal is to be at as many jams as we could possibly be; win, lost or draw. If we lose, we lose; like I said before, we were there and that is the goal.
우리의 임무, Zulu Kingz 성명서는, Afrika Babaataa의 오리지널 이상을 떠받들고 이어나가는 것이고 그것이 우리의 코드이다.. 그 Bambaataa의 이상이라 하자면, Bam이 Zulu Nation을 만들었을 때의 이상이다. 우리는 그 이상을 떠받들고 유지해나가지만 단지 차이점은 Breaking으로서 하는 것이다. 우리의 임무이다. 우리의 목적은 될 수 있는 한 모든 Jam에 참여하는 것이다. 이기던, 지던, 비기던 말이다. 아까도 말했듯이, 우리는 그곳에 있었기 때문이다. 이것이 우리의 목적이다.
KOREAN ROC: If you want to join the Zulu Kingz you have to battle with the members, after that you are accepted. Is there any reason you keep this tradition?
줄루킹즈 에 합류할 시에 항상 줄루킹즈 멤버들과 배틀끝에 인정을 받아야한다. 이런 신고식?방법 을 계속 유지하고있는 이유는 무엇이냐?
NESS: It’s not that you have to battle if you want to join Zulu-kings. It doesn’t mater if you want to join Zulu kings, Zulu kings that wants you. Once we want you the initiation is that battle. That’s the rule. It’s not official until you have a jam with enough Zulu kings for you to really rock with us. And that’s the tradition. I’ve seen brothers for instance Nurse boogie, Asia one, and Turtle roc battle 30 of us. Squirt had it bad Squirt battled 14,15of us. To get in. but it’s not so much that you have to battle to get down but we just want to keep the tradition because, it work two ways we get to see what you got what you bringing to the table and at the same time you get to see what your crew mates got.
Zulu Kings를 들어오려면 배틀 해야 하는 게 아니다. 네가 들어오고 싶어하는 거는 중요하지 않다. 중요한 건 Zulukingz가 너를 원해야 한다. 우리가 너를 원하는 게 확정되면 그 입문 식 이 배틀 이다. 그게 우리의 법이다. Zulu kingz에 완전히 입단 되려면 우리의 많은 멤버들과 잼을 해보고 나서 정말 우리와 함께 Zulu kingz를 대표할 수 있다. 그리고 이것이 전통이다. Nurse Boogie, Asia one 과 Turtle roc 은 30명을 상대로 배틀했다. 3대 30이었다. Squirt는 정말 최악이었다 혼자서 14,15명의 Zulu kingz멤버와 배틀하였다. 그러나 우리와 함께하기 위해서 배틀은 그렇게 크게 중요한 게 아니다 그저 우린 전통을 지키고 싶을 뿐이다. 그리고 이것이 두 가지 이유로 좋은데 네가 우리를 위해서 뭐를 내놓을 수 있는지 우리가 확인할 수 있고 너에게 우리가 갖고 있는 것들을 보여줄 수 있는 좋은 자리이다.
KOREAN ROC: Has there been any moment when you got mad about the b-boying scene?
B-Boying을 하면서 화 가나게 하는 것은?
NESS: The older I got and the more I got to understand the dance. I started get disgusted with the battles. Because I have absolutely no control what the DJ is playing. That’s the ting to me. People often ask what’s the difference between a breakdancer and bboy to me a breakdancer will dance to anything bboys gonna wait for his beat. When you watch old-school black exploitation movies when the hero of the movie walks in to the room, they start the theme music. It’s the same thing with breaking. When you step in the cipher whatever is playing that music is your theme song. When you hitting your top-rock and rocking, that music has to complement with what you doing in your style. That’s when I got disgusted with the battles because they would play anything. Miracles for instance I love that song I can dance to that song all night but I don’t want to battle to that. How can I get hardcore gangster alien ness rusty Shank style cutting off heads blasting peoples, switchblades and in the back ground I’m hearing ‘I believe in miracles baby’…you understand what I’m saying? It doesn’t fit my style and character. So I got disgusted not with the battle scene I started getting disgusted with how the DJs was spinning calling themselves breakbeat DJs. If you are a break beat DJ you only play the breaks. So you don’t play the whole miracles song. You trough a two wack song and then you just keep playing the beginning the break and intro and bring in the other one keep the break going, because it’s all about the break. That is what a break beat dj does. But as soon as it starts goes ‘I believe in miracles~’ How is that suppose to accentuate a hard core bboy style or ‘I got a date in the rain’. Just because a song is funky doesn’t makes it a breakbeat. If you want to be technical the original breaks were only about 2 seconds long. It was just a matter of keeping that break going. They weren’t playing the whole record. They were just playing a phrase. It’s not that when I was battling I got disgusted at a point of battles; it’s just that I got disgusted at a point of what so called breakbeat DJs were playing and how they chose to play. If you are a breakbeat DJ and you are spinning at a B-boy competition there should be no reason for anybody to hear any kind of lyrics of an oldschool song. It’s different when you’re playing hip-hop. You can take a song like ‘Big Daddy Kane – Raw, Set it off’ and play the whole song because the whole song is a break and he is coming with some hardcore lyrics and its braggadocios and it fits the B-boy style. All these old songs that they play ain’t break beat songs they got to find the breakbeat with in the songs. That is what I got disgusted about with the battles. It wasn’t so much the battles of the bboy scene, it was more so the DJs. Learn to get it right ya.
내가 나이가 들어가고 더욱더 춤에 대한 이해를 갖게 되었다. 그럼으로 배틀에 대해 정이 떨어졌다. 이유는 DJ들이 노래를 트는데 이에 대한 컨트롤이 없다. 나에게는 말이다. 많은 사람들이 나에게 breakdancer랑 bboy랑의 차이점을 물어보는데 breakdancer는 아무 음악에 춤을 추지만 bboy는 자신의 음악을 기다릴 것이다. 옛날 영화들을 보면 영웅이 등장할 때 테마노래가 나온다. 브레이킹도 같다. 싸이퍼 안으로 들어설 때 그 때 틀어진 음악이 너의 테마노래다. 너가 탑락을 하는 스타일과 음악과 연관이 있어야 한다. 이래서 내가 배틀에 정이 떨어졌다고 할 수 있다 왜냐하면 아무거나 음악을 틀어서이다. 예를 들어 'I believe in miracles' 나는 정말 이 노래를 좋아한다 밤 세 춤을 출수 있을 것이다. 그러나 이 노래로 배틀은 하고 싶지 않다. 어떻게 이 노래로 하드코어 갱스터 엘리언네스, 러스티 생크 스타일로 상대방 머리를 자르고, 날리고, 칼질하는데 뒤 배경에서는 'I believe in miracles' 음악이 나온다면 말이 되는가...내가 말하는 거 이해 가지? 나의 스타일이나 캐릭터랑 전혀 어울리지 않는다. 배틀 scene에 대해서 정이 떨어진 게 아니라 디제이들이 음악을 트는 것을 보고 그들이 breakbeat Dj라고 말하는 것에 대해서 정이 떨어졌다. 너가 breakbeat dj라면 너는 브레이크만 틀 것이다. 그럼으로 너는 'miracle'노래 전체를 틀지 않을 것이다. 두 개의 좋은 노래를 올려놓고 계속해서 시작 부분 브래이크를 틀다가 다음 것을 연결해서 계속해서 브래이크만 틀 것이다. 왜냐하면 모든 게 브래이크에 관련된 거기 때문이다. 이것이 breakbeat dj가 할 일이다. 그러나 'I believe in miracles~'하는 순간 어떻게 하드코어 비보이 스타일을 어떻게 강조할 수 있는가. I got a date in the rain같은 것도 말이다. 노래가 펑키하다고 해서 그것이 breakbeat는 아니다. 전문적으로 말 하면 오리지널 브레이크들은 2초밖에 안 된다. 중요한 것은 이 브레이크를 계속 이어나가는 것이었다. 그들은 전체 레코드를 톨지 않았다. 그저 일부분만 틀었다. 네가 정말 breakbeat dj고 비보이 대회에서 음악을 튼다면 올드스쿨 노래에서의 가사가 귀에 들어올 이유가 없다. 힙합은 다른 경우이다. 'Big Daddy Kane - Raw, Set it off'를 갖고 전체 노래를 첨부터 끝까지 틀어도 된다 왜냐하면 그 노래 전제가 브레이크 이기 때문이다. 그리고 정말 비보잉 스타일에 맞는 강력한 가사를 갖고 있기 때문이다. 모든 옛날 노래가 전부 breakbeat 노래는 아니다 그 안에서 breakbeat를 찾아야 한다. 이런 점이 배틀에 대한 정이 떨어졌다. 제대로 할 수 있도록 배워라.
KOREAN ROC: Your definition of a Battle?
당신에게 있어 ‘Battle’이란 어떤 의미입니까?
NESS: It’s me and you. Toe to toe, blow to blow with no H2O all night until someone runs out of moves or somebody quits. B-boys now a day are spoiled with the competitions 3rounds or 2rounds. No ‘I’m nickel dimming you all night’ until you run out of moves or till you quit. And I’m smart. My mind was made for the battle. I’ll start my runs in 1982 and bring you up to 2008 real slow. To me that’s what a real battle is. These competitions aren’t real battles, they’re chess games. I like the competitions too because it’s like playing chess its all strategy it’s all mental the whole 9 yards. So I’m not knocking the competitions. But the competitions are spoiling the B-boys. I’ve had cats call me out and don’t understand what the hell is going on until they lost. They think they can come in there with there with their air-flare or they’re air-chair blow up and beat Alien Ness. No you gotta make me run out of moves. You gonna go out and tell somebody you beat Alien Ness that means you have more moves than Alien Ness, More runs, more burns, more style…Then you can go out and say you beat Alien Ness.
그저 너와 나 일대일로 밤새도록 둘 중 한 명이 무브가 고갈 나거나 누군가 관둘 때까지 계속된다. 요즘의 비보이들은 대회의 3라운드 2라운드 때문에 망쳐졌다. 아냐 ‘밤새도록....' 네 무브가 고갈 날 때까지나 포기할 때까지 할 것이다. 나는 배틀을 하기 위해 만들어진 머리이다. 그리고 난 똑똑하다. 나의 무브를 1982년부터 2008년까지 천천히 끌어올 것이다. 그것이 내가 생각하는 진정한 배틀이다. 이 대회들은 진짜 배틀이 아니다, 이것은 체스 게임이다. 나도 대회를 좋아한다 왜냐하면 정말 체스 게임처럼 전부 전략이기 때문이다. 그럼으로 내가 대회를 나쁘게 보는 건 아니다. 그러나 대회가 비보이들을 망치고 있는 건 맞다. 전에 나를 배틀로 불러내가지고 뭔 일이 일어나는지 이해를 못하고 자신이 졌을 때 이해를 못하는 사람들이 있다. 그들이 생각하기에 자기 내들이 와서 자신들의 에어 flare나 에어체어로 터트려서 Alien Ness를 이길 수 있다고 생각한다. 그러나 그게 아니다 나의 무브를 고갈 시켜야 나를 이겼다고 할 수 있다. 네가 나를 이겼다고 다른 사람한테 말을 한다면 그것은 너가 나보다 많은 무브를 갖고 있고 더 많은 턴을 갖고 스타일을 갖고 있다는 의미다...그런 이후 사람들에게 가서 나를 이겼다고 말을 할 수 있다.
KOREAN ROC: I have seen you smoking while you were battling in IBE 2005. I really think it was a raw concept; however there have been opinions that this could be a bad influence to the young bboys at that time. Any thoughts about this?
예전으로 돌아가서 IBE2005 에서 담배를 태우며 배틀에 임하는 것을 보았다. 정말로 RAW 했던 컨셉이지만 현시대 어린 비보이등에게 악영향을 줄 수 있다는 의견도 그 당시 많이 나돌았다. 어떻게 생각하는가?
NESS: These young B-boys are listening to 2pac. I understand very much that I have been blessed and honored to being in a position people might see me as a role model. But the real truth to the matter is that I’m just a B-boy and as a B-boy I’m gonna manifest everything I am. The day I start hiding something from my mother I start hiding it from the world. I have two daughters. My daughters listen to Little Kim, 2Pac, Jay-Z they listen to all that stuff. Is all that stuff going to affect my kids? No because my kids got fantastic mothers. You see all the other stuffs in the outside… that’s BS. Everything starts with the parent. If you can’t control what your parents do and be part of your children’s lives to know what’s going on We are at Holland. Legal weed, tried tested and proven that it’s safe harmless has medical benefits, it’s beneficial to the country. They have no drug crimes like we have in the states. Everybody in the IBE was smoking take a good look at that DVD that room is fogging up. Everybody made a big deal because I went into the cipher with the joint. It was just, spur of the moment. I had to go nuts machine said ‘Give me the joint’ and I’m like ‘Na I’m gonna take this sucker out with me’ and right there at the spot we created a commando. Honestly it’s a B-boy battle, right? Something to take the energy from our opponents and take the energy on us. That’s what it’s all about an organized battle. When you have a battle with no judges\, no nothing and it’s an exhibition battle all it is two people or two crews going head up for the sick and enjoyment of the croud. So I’m gonna brin in the shock battle. You know everybody is talking about me smoking a joint. You know what I’ve never heard nobody die from a joint. But every single B-boy are pulling out shot guns and guns. So ya beef about me smoking a joint put all them fake guns and fake shotguns and switch blades away and stop being hipocirt. Straight up.

IBE에 있던 모든 사람들은 스모킹(smoking)하고 있었어, DVD를 보면 방이 연기로 가득 찬 걸 볼 수 있을 거야. 사람들은 내가 대마초를 물고 싸이퍼에 들어간 거에 대해서 과장되게 얘기하고 있지. 그건 단지 그 순간을 위한 자극이었을 뿐이야. 나는 흥분하고 싶었고 Machine이 대마초를 달라고 했을 때 나는 '안돼, 나는 이거 물고 나갈 거야' 라고 했지. 그리고 우리는 거기서 Commando를 만들었지. 솔직히 이건 비보이 배틀 이자나 그렇지? 나는 배틀을 이기기 위해서 뭐든지 할거야. 그러니까 그건 별거 아니지. 내가 세상을 향해 '와~ 나는 IBE에서 대마초를 피고 있어!'가 아니라 쇼킹한 것을 보여주려 했던거지. 상대에게서 에너지를 뺏어 나에게 에너지가 될 만한 쇼킹한 것. 이것이 바로 잘 형성된 배틀 이지. 배틀에 심사위원이 없고 아무것도 없을 때, 두 명이나 두 Crew는 관중들을 sick하고 즐겁게 해주는 대회 야. 그래서 나는 쇼킹한 배틀을 보여주려 한다. 사람들이 내가 대마초 피우는 것에 대해 얘기하는 것을 다들 알 거야. 하지만 너는 대마초를 피우다가 죽은 사람 얘기는 들어 본적이 없지. 하지만 많은 비보이들은 샷건 하고 총들을 꺼내고 있어. 그러니까 내가 대마초 핀다고 나한테 beef있는 인간들 그 가짜 총들하고 칼하고 무기들(비보잉 안에 펀칭.컷팅.슛팅 그밖에 공격적 Burn 을 뜻함) 다 치우고 위선자 행동 좀 그만해. Straight Up.
KOREAN ROC: What meaning does ‘respect’ hold in the bboying scene?
비보잉 신 에 있어 리스펙 이란 어떤의미 인가?
NESS: There’s two forms of respect when we looking at the B-boy scene and one form of respect. You respect somebody highly like I respect Freeze from ghost crew and Crazy from Switzerland. I respect all oldschool B-boy still out there doing their thing. That is always going to be there. That’s in everything. Me I think the level in respect in B-boy should really to your opponent. That is missing the most in breaking. Too much cutting off runs. Too much rushing the cipher when one of your boys do one dope move and everyone runs in crazy. That’s a lack of respect. Touching is a lack of respect. There is no need to touch this is not the 70’s this is not the 80’s. People use to do that in the 70’s and 80’s it was no big deal. But there is no room for that in this day and age. Me I don’t care. People can do whatever they want to me. Don’t mess with my crew tough. ibE is another fine example of that. I don’t know who it was it was probably either Bangroc or C4. One of them two guys. When we were battling. Korea one of them was rocking in my face and put his hand on top of my head and I let him. Because I come from a generation where that’s normal. But soon as someone took kareem’s hat and threw it off I was the first one to rush. Because that’s a new generation you don’t do that they don’t understand that. That’s how fights start. It was a hitted fight and I came out really raw and rugged, but that’s just me. I’m the oldest member in any squad I’m in so I feel real protective of my crew. To me they could do whatever they want. I got touched before anybody and I stood there and took it like a man . You can do whatever you want to me in a battle. But when your run is over just know that I’m gonna bring it to you just as hard or harder. Anything you do in a battle expecially to me your opening up a can of worms. Your setting the standards of what the battle should be. So the second you start disrespecting your opponent your opening the doors for your opponenets to disrespect you. And when the opponents disrespect that B-boy the B-boys looking at the judge ‘Oh-he touch me ‘ But your man over there.
Respect에는 두 가지가 있는데 하나는 비보이 scene에서가 하나다. 사람들은 누군가를 크게 respect하지, 내가 Ghost Crew의 Freeze와 스위스의 Crazy를 respect하듯이. 나는 아직도 활동하고 있는 올드스쿨 비보이들을 respect 한다. 이것은 언제나 있을거야. 이건 모든 것에 포함되지. 내 생각에는 비보이에 있어서 respect의 레벨은 너의 상대편에게 해야되. 지금 브레이킹에서 이게 제일 보이지 않는다. 남의 차례일 때 너무 끼어들어. 너무 빨리 진행되는 싸이퍼 에다가 한 명이 dope move를 했을 때, 모든 사람들이 미친 듯이 끼어들지. 이건 respect가 부족한 거야. 터치하는 것도 respect가 부족한 거야. 건드릴 필요도 없고 이건 70's도 아니고 80's도 아니야. 70년도, 80년도 때 사람들은 자주했지만 그땐 큰 일도 아니었다. 하지만 오늘날 그런 건 안 맞다. 나는 상관 안 해. 나한테 무슨 짓을 하든 상관 안 해. 하지만 내 Crew에게 덤비지는 마. IBE가 또 좋은 예가 될 수 있지. 누군지는 잘 생각 안 나는데 내 생각에는 Bangroc 아니면 C4일거야. 둘 중에 한 명. 우리가 배틀할 때. 한국인중 한 명이 내 얼굴에 rockin을 하고 내 머리 위에 손을 올려놓았는데 나는 그가 마음대로 하게 했다. 왜냐면 나는 그게 가능한 시대 때 온 사람이니까. 하지만 누군가 Kareem의 모자를 가지고 가서 날렸을 때 그때 제일 먼저 나선 건 나였다. 왜냐면 그는 새로운 시대이고 그들은 이해를 못하니깐 말이야. 그렇게 해서 싸움이 시작되는 거지. 뜨거운 싸움이었고 나는 거칠고 상처가 된 상태로 나왔어, 하지만 그게 나야. 나는 어딜 가나 제일 나이가 많기 때문에 나는 우리 crew에 있어서 매우 방어적이다. 나에게는 무슨 짓을 할 수 있어. 나는 훨씬 전부터 사람들이 나를 건드렸고 나는 그걸 남자답게 받아들였지. 배틀에서 너는 나에게 무슨 짓이든 할 수 있어. 하지만 너의 무브가 끝나자마자 나는 쳐 들어갈 것이고, 나는 너에게 더욱 더 강하게 나갈 것이다. 너가 배틀에 무엇이든 하든지 솔직히 나에게, 너는 큰 실수를 하는 거야. 너는 배틀이 어떻게 되어야 되는지 기준을 정하게 되는 거야. 너가 배틀에서 상대방을 respect 안 하는 순간 너는 상대방이 너를 respect안 하게 만들어 주는 거야. 상대방이 그 비보이를 respect 안 할 때 그 비보이는 심사위원을 보면서 '얘가 나 건드렸어' 라고 해도 '너의 팀에 있는 쟤가 먼저 건드렸어' 라고 할거야.

음악과 Breaking의 관계는 무어라고 생각하십니까?
NESS: It’s all related without the music there be no breaking. Everything comes from the break. They say Kool Herk is the father of Hip Hop he created Hip-Hop. They say it all started with him. But what before Kool Herk threw his first party there was already B-boys.Fine tune in the art of dancing and Kool Herk has proven that himself. He said that in his first party he threw on his breaks and say ‘B-boys are you ready~’ how many times have ou heard Kool Herk say that. So that means when Kool Herk threw his first party they were already B-boys out there The only reason Kool Herk got popular is the Breaks. And every B-boy and every dancer in NewYork City wanted to go to Kool Herk’s party. Why? Because he played the breaks He didn’t do nothing fancy. He wasn’t cutting up like flash. He wasn’t bringing raw breakbeats like Bambataa. He just played the breaks. And everybody flied. Why? He played the breaks. It all starts with the B-boying. But it all starts with the music. Before Kool Herck there were bands. So it’s all related.

KOREAN ROC: Tell us about the Bronx style.
"브롱스 스타일" 에 대하여 말해주세요.
NESS: So For starters let me tell you where I got the term. In the 80’s when Melli Mell, the Furious 5 all those Mc’s moved to L.A. There was one mc that moved with them. He never blew up in New York. Never made a record in N.Y. But he went with them to L.A. started making records with them out there. His name was Bobby Bob. When he moved to L.A. he extended his name and called himself ‘Bronx style Bobby Bob’. I was feeling him big time. Cause I’m from the Bronx. I was always like ‘that’s dope Bronx style Bobby Bob’ I always liked the term Bronx style. That’s where it really comes from. Mc Bobby Bob’s name. So then Bronx style I started using that as to identify myself. So I was Bronx Style Alien Ness. Sometimes when people ask me to sign something I’ll sign it something Bronx style Alien ness. Because I was trying to do like Bobby Bob. I was biting Bobby Bob’s whole theme. That’s what happened that was like my screen name, I got it tattooed on my belly, and when I went to do my video. When I did the ‘Blue Print’, when I did my solo video. I decided to call it the Bronx Style. Some how people started incorporating that with breaking. Well I was kind of feeling it because it was fitting. So then after a while like on the message board instead of using the term foundation or oldschool bboy. I started saying Bronx style. And it took on from there. Actually in the wickypedia and it says ‘the original style of bboying that came from the Bronx.’ When I saw that I was bugging. I was like damn this whole thing started just because I started biting Bronx Style Bobby Bob’s name. But now I think it’s fitting, I ain’t mad at everybody. That was just me feeding off Bobby Bob and using that term to describe me. And everybody started calling it Bronx Style. So then I started using Bronx Style instead of using foundation. People use the word foundation and they don’t really know about. Old school breaking people don’t really know about. Really think about it Breaking is old school. We’re all doing oldschool doesn’t matter what you do. Come up with a brand new move something nobody has ever seen in their lives, brand spanking new, but you know what. If you’re doing on breaking it’s an old school dance. So I didn’t like the term old school. So then I started using Bronx Style to define it. Because it came from the Bronx. So when I say Bronx style I meant the original style of dance in the game in the Bronx. Like I said it just got into the wickypedia line. You can go to wickypedia and type in Bronx Style and enter Bamb there it goes. I’m actually proud of that. I was.

Bronx Style 이라는 용어가 정말 맘에 들었다. 그 용어가 실질적으로 Bobby Bob의 이름에서 나온 거다. 그럼으로 나는 Bronx Style로 내 자신을 밝히기 시작했다. 내 자신을 Bronx Style Alien Ness라고 부르기 시작했다. 가끔 사람들이 나보고 뭔가 싸인 해달라고 하면 Bronx Style Alien Ness라고 쓸 때도 있다. 왜냐하면 내가 Bobby Bob 처럼 되고 싶어서였다. 내가 Bobby Bob의 테마를 바이팅하고 있었다. 나와 관련된 모든 게 그렇게 되 있었다 한동안. 나의 screen name, 내 배에도 문신되어있고 내가 비디오 작업을 할 때도 말이다. 내가 'Blueprint'나 솔로 비디오를 작업했을 때 도 말이다. 그래서 이 모든 것을 Bronx style이라고 부르기로 결정했다. 어떻겐 가 사람들이 그걸 브레이킹과 연관 지으기 시작했다. 나도 그것에 맞아 떨어지고 좋은 느낌이 들었다. 그래서 그 이후 메시지 보드에 foundation이나 old school B-boy라고 말하기 보다 Blueprint로 사용하기 시작했다. 모든게 내가 Bronx Style을 내세운 데서 시작했다. 그리고 거기에서 나아간 거고. 실질적으로 wikipedia(미국 온라인 백과사전) 에 들어가서 쳐보면 '브롱스에서의 오리지널 스타일'이라고 뜬다. 이것을 보았을 때 솔직히 신경에 쓰였다. 왜냐하면 모든 게 내가 Bronx Style Bobby Bob의 이름을 바이트하는데서 시작됐기 때문이다. 그러나 지금의 나는 이게 맞아 떨어진다고 생각한다. 그리고 누구에게도 화나있지 않다. 그저 Bobby Bob의 이름을 따서 내 자신을 칭하는 것이었다. 그리고 모든 사람들이 따라서 Bronx Style 이라고 부르기 시작한 것이다. 그것에 따라 나도 foundation 대신에 Bronx Style 이라는 용어를 사용하기 시작했다. 사람들은 foundation이라는 용어를 쓰고 그에 대한 확실한 의미를 이해하지 못한다. Old school breaking도 마찬가지로 이해하지 못하는 사람들이 많다. 실질적으로 생각해보면 breaking 자체가 old school이다. 우리 모두 뭐를 하든 올드스쿨 을 하고 있는 것이다. 아무도 못 본 새로운 기술이나 무브를 한다 해도 네가 브레이킹 속에 한다면 그게 old school 춤이다. 그래서 나는 old school이라는 용어를 좋아하지 않았다. 그래서 나는 Bronx Style 이라는 단어로 표현하기 시작했다. 왜냐하면 이것이 Bronx에서 왔기 때문이다. 그럼으로 내가 Bronx Style이라고 말하면 춤의 오리지날 스타일을 말하는 거다 Bronx에서 말이다. 아까 말했듯이 최근에 wikipedia에 들어갔다. wikipedia 에 들어가서 'Bronx Style'이라고 타이프 하면 나온다. 사실 이것에 대해서 나는 자랑스럽다.
KOREAN ROC: You have always emphasized about the blueprint. Could you explain it to us about it.
당신이 항상 강조하는 것은 블루프린트 이다. 이것에 대하여 설명해달라.
NESS: Everybody says you can’t build a house without a strong foundation, correct? Even before the foundation is laid somebody got to draw up a blueprint. So when I did my first DVD I didn’t want to record it ‘Foundation’ or ‘Fundamental’, Basics, or anything like that. I gotta go beyond that. I gotta come different. I just said to myself blueprint is very fitting trying to go with the blueprint what I try to do was go into things that were there before foundation. Basic sweeps, basic shuffles stuffs like that. None of those stuffs are really foundation. As I said before people don’t know what foundation is. In the 80’s I didn’t know what foundation was. That word was never used in the 80’s. I’m sure if you ask any generation bboy before in your time ‘is there the word foundation?’ they gonna say no. So I’m teaching stuffs from the era before the sculpture was being done before they lay down a foundation. That’s the blue print. It’s just me trying to be creative getting a title to it.
모두다 집을 짓기 위해서는 탄탄한 기초가 필요하다고 한다, 맞지? 기초가 있기 이전에 누군가가 설계도를 그려야 한다. 그럼으로 내가 첫 DVD를 했을 때 나는 제목을 'Foundation'이나 'Fundamental', 'Basics' 이나 다른 걸로 하고 싶지 않았다. 그 보다 더 깊이 들어가야 했다. 남들과 다르게 나오고 말이다. 그래서 내 자신에게 말을 했지 blueprint (청사진.상세한 계획)가 정말 잘 어울릴 거라고. 이 블루프린트로 나는 foundation이전에 있었던 것들을 하려고 했다. 기본적 sweeps(스윕스), shuffles(셔플)과 같은 것들은 실질적으로 foundation이 아니다. 전에 말했듯이 사람들은 foundation이 뭔지 모른다. 80년대에 나도 foundation이 뭔지 몰랐다. 이 말은 80년대에 사용되지 않았다. 내가 확신하는데 이전 시대의 비보이 아무에게나 '파운데이션이라는 단어가 있나요?'하고 물어보면 그들은 없다고 대답할 것이다. 그럼으로 나는 모형이 만들어지기 이전 foundation이 놓여지기 이전의 것을 가르치고 있는 것이다. 그것이 Blueprint다. 그저 내가 창조적으로 제목을 이끌어내는 것이다.
KOREAN ROC: What is the definition of foundation?
Foundation을 정의하자면?
NESS: Stunt Man said it best ‘It’s not what you do. It’s how you do’. That’s what foundation is. Ken swift said ‘I can teach anybody sweeps, swipes, yadayada yada and they can get it and get it down pack but is that foundation no. Foundation is how you plot. If there even is a foundation. If you wanna go to foundation you’ve to go to the bottom. The bottom is all about style. It’s how brothers did this. That’s what foundation is. How brothers did this. For me you got the blueprint which is the actual steps but foundation is the style how you bring those steps across. That’s what foundation is. How you step into the cipher, How you go down, how a bboy holds his hat when his spinning. To me that’s what foundation is. It’s the style, it’s not moves.
Stunt Man이 최고로 잘 말했다. "하는 게 중요한 게 아니라 네가 어떡해 하는지가 중요하다." 그것이 foundation이다. Ken Swift는 "나는 누구나 에게 sweeps, swipes, 이것 저것 가르치고 그들은 알아들을 수 있지만 그것이 foundation인가, 아니다. Foundation은 너가 어떡해 구상하는지 이다. 만약에 foundation이 있다면 말이다. 만약에 foundation을 하고 싶다면 너는 처음으로 가야 한다. 그 아래에는 스타일만이 존재한다. Brothers가 그렇게 했듯이. 그것이 foundation 인 것이다. Brothers가 어떡해 했는지. 너는 나의 blue print를 가지고 스텝들을 배울 수 있지만 foundation은 너가 그 스텝들을 어떡해 활용하고 스타일 있게 표현하는지 이다. 그게 foundation이다. 너가 어떻게 싸이퍼에 들어오는지, 너가 어떻게 go down을 하는지, 어떻게 비보이가 돌면서 모자를 잡는지, 나에게는 그게 foundation이다. 중요한 건 스타일이다, 무브 들이 아니라.
KOREAN ROC: Any hard times in your breaking life?
Breaking을 하면서 힘든 시간이 있었다면?
NESS: All the time breaklife is hard. Our whole breaking curriour has been hard. Look I’m 41years old doing stuffs that I did when I was 15. That in itself is hard on the body, the mental. Sometimes I don’t make as much as a brother who’s working at 905. I got everything, my rents and this and that but I still got kids overseas I gotta head on. Expecially in United States you don’t take care of your kid’s child support them. They take away your passport. They take away my passport than what’s gonna happen to me? So my whole life is hard. That struggle in breaking the constant struggle. Hard times for me other than that I think for me were when I went into a slump. I went in to a slump when I got kicked out of Rocksteady crew. Because I said ‘here I am in Rocksteady crew, now I’m out what do you do after that?’ My mind there is no next level. That was like the most important crew in breaking and I’m not even down with that. There is nothing else after that. For me it was a real hard time in my life. I wasn’t even trying to get gigs and anything you know and mr. Freeze came up to me and he was like ‘You know Ness. You were Alien Ness before Rock Steady, you’r gonna be Alien Ness forever.’ Just those words made me just ‘you know what I’m gonna keep doing Alien Ness.’ But other than that I’m not gonna front. Life is good, god has been good to me life has been good to me, all you supporters they’ve been good to me. People who request me at jams and say ‘we want Alien Ness’ ‘Na we want Alien Ness work shop’. You know it’s really hard for me to sit here and tell you my life is hard. I’ve been blessed for all the support I get.
언제나 breaklife는 힘들다. 우리의 브레이킹 생활은 언제나 힘들었다. 나를 봐 41살먹어서 내가 15살 때 하던 거를 하고 있다. 이 자체로 몸과 정신에 무리를 준다. 어쩔 때 나는 905에서 일하는 사람보다도 돈을 못 벌 때가 있다. 나도 모든 게 문제다, 내 집세나 렌트비도 내야하고 해외에 사는 아이들도 돌봐야 하고 한다. 특별히 미국에서는 자기 자식들을 돌보지 않는다면 나라에서 네 여권을 뺏어간다. 나의 여권을 뺏어가면 나에게는 무슨 일이 일어날까? 그래서 내 인생이 힘들다는 것이다. 브레이킹에서의 계속되는 고난. 또 다른 고난을 생각하라면 내가 슬럼프에 빠졌을 때다. 나는 Rock Steady에서 쫓겨 났을 때 슬럼프로 접어들었다. 왜냐하면 가장 높은 레벨의 Rock Steady crew에 와있고 더 이상 다음 단계가 없다고 생각했다. 그 상황에서 그 크루가 나에게 가장 중요했다. 나에게는 정말 힘든 시기였다. 정말 아무 일도 하고 싶지 않았었다. 그러는 와중 Mr. Freeze가 나에게 와서 이 한마디를 했다 'Ness알아 너는 Rock Steady들어오기 이전에도 Ness였고 앞으로도 평생 Ness일 것이다.' 이 한마디로 나는 다시 생각을 했다 '그래 맞아 난 계속 Alien Ness고 이 일을 할거다.' 그러나 모든걸 제외하고 거짓말을 안 하겠는데. 인생은 즐겁다. 하느님은 나에게 잘해주었고, 나를 지지해주는 사람들도 다 잘해주었다. 정말 많은 이벤트나 잼에서 나를 찾고 나의 워크샵을 원한다. 그래서 그런지 여기 자리에 앉아서 내 인생은 힘들다고 말하기가 정말 민망하다. 정말 나는 모두의 도움으로 축복받았다.
KOREAN ROC: What have you earned from those hard times?
그 힘들었던 시기에서 무엇을 얻었는가?
NESS: I’ve learned so much from the hard times and all the good times. The hard times I learned to adapt. It’s one of the most important things in the world. If you can not adapt to a situation, you are lost completely. No matter what the situation is whether it is a bad situation or a good situation? That’s what I’ve learned the most from the bad times adapting. From the Good times that life ain’t as bad as I thought. I use to be angry at the world I didn’t give a damn about nothing not my life. I was really suicidal I was ready to go raw raw. But after living the positive life because of breaking that I learned how to really love life. Just chill calm myself down a lot so a lot of lessons. Life is about lessons. That’s the meaning of life you live to learn. If you ain’t learning nothing your wasting your life.
나는 힘든 시간들과 좋은 시간들을 통해 아주 많이 배웠다. 힘든 시간에는 적응하는 것을 배웠다. 이건 살면서 아주 중요한 것이다. 만약 다른 상황마다 적응을 못한다면, 너는 완전히 헤매고 말 것이다. 상황이 어떻든, 나쁜 상황이든 좋은 상황이든. 나는 이것을 힘든 시기 때 적응하면서 배웠다. 좋은 시기 때는 인생이 내가 생각한 것보다 그리 나쁘지 않았다. 나는 내가 상관도 안 하던 이 세계에 대해서 화가 나기도 했다. 나는 자포자기 상태였고 상처투성이가 될 준비도 됐었다. 하지만 긍정적인 인생을 브레이킹을 통해 살게 되면서 인생을 즐기고 사랑하는 법을 알게 되었다. 흥분을 가라앉히고 chilling하며 많은 것을 배웠다. 인생은 배우는 것이다. 이것이 인생의 의미이고 우리는 배우기 위해 사는 것이다. 만약 너가 배우는 것이 없다면, 너는 인생을 낭비하는 것이다.
KOREAN ROC: What do you think about the present b-boying style?
요즘의 비보이 스타일에 대해서 어떻게 생각하나요?
NESS: I think it’s really dope about the present bboy styles. I don’t know I come from a era a style belongs to someone there was no Bronx style, Manhattan Style, Queens Style. But naggers will recognize Crazy Legs style, Ken Swift’s style; they’ll recognize Freeze’s style. Now it’s a little bit different because of the overpopulation of the bboy scene. You are so overpopulated like that and then people in tight unit. People start to look alike. This is the so called terms. I don’t believe in the term. But these so called L.A., east Coast, Miami Style. I don’t believe in that and there one style of breaking that’s breaking your either doing it or not doing it. Because everything is part of breaking. I don’t care if you want to do air moves all day you’re still breaking your not doing a air move style your still breaking. You’re doing a peace of breaking. You want to do footwork all day that’s not a footwork style you’re doing a peace of breaking. So styles I kinda stay away from that term. But I see nothing wrong with the different styles. I like everything; honestly I’m trying to learn the air-flare right now I want to be the oldest nagger out there doing a air-flare. It’s not that I’m anti power, skill, flexible transitions. I just know what I’m capable of. It’s not that I’m anti anything. The only thing I’m anti is people who are anti me. If they anti me than I’m anti you. But other than that I like everything. I just wish people can open up and try to actually realize one complete dance. It’s not just about that. It’s not just about that freeze or this way of doing stuff, or how many times you can do an rotation. I like everything out there all the different styles. But I just wish people would really recognize that it’s just tip of the iceberg. It’s just the icing on the top of the cake. There’s so much to make the cake you got flowers, eggs, ….and you mix it up and bake it and put tops on that then you have the cake. It’s the same in breaking.
현재의 비보이 스타일은 매우 dope하다. 내가 온 시대에는 스타일이 누군가의 스타일이지 Bronx Style, Manhattan Style, Queens Style은 없었다. 하지만 사람들은 Crazy Legs의 스타일, Ken Swift의 스타일은 알아볼 수 있었고, Freeze의 스타일도 알아볼 수 있었다. 요즘은 비보이들이 많아서 지금은 많이 다를 수 밖에 없다. 사람들이 넘쳐나면서 팀들도 많이 생겼다. 사람들의 스타일이 비슷한 게 많이 보인다. 사람들은 그렇게 말하지만, 나는 동의안 한다. LA, East Coast, Miami Style이라고 불리는 이런 전문어들을 믿지 않는다. 브레이킹에 하나의 스타일이 있고 그것이 브레이킹이고 너는 그것을 한다, 안 한다는 이런 말을 나는 못 듣겠다. 왜냐면 모든 것은 브레이킹의 일부이기 때문이다. 너가 공중 무브들을 매일 한다고 해도 너는 브레이킹하고 있는 것이다. 너는 에어 무브 스타일이 아니라 브레이킹을 하는 것이다. 너는 브레이킹의 일부를 하는 것이다. 너가 풋웍을 매일 한다고 너는 풋웍 스타일이 아니라 너는 브레이킹의 일부를 하는 것이다. 그래서 나는 스타일이라는 그 전문어를 쓰기를 거부한다. 하지만 나는 색다른 스타일들에 대해서 나쁘게 보는 것은 아니다. 나는 모든 것이 좋고, 솔직히 나는 지금 air-flare(에어 플레어)를 배우고 있고 나는 air-flare를 하는 제일 늙은 사람이 되려고 한다. 내가 파워무브, 스킬, 플렉시블 무브들을 반대 한다고 하는 것이 아니다. 나는 내가 뭘 할 수 있는지 알 수 있다. 내가 무엇인가 라를 반대하는 것이 아니다. 내가 오직 반대 하는 것은 나를 싫어하는 사람들이다. 그들이 나에 대해서 반대라면 나는 그들에게 반대한다. 그것만 없으면 나는 모든 것이 좋다. 나는 사람들이 마음을 열고 이 모든 요소들이 하나의 춤이라는 것을 알아차렸으면 한다. 이 춤의 모든 것이 프리즈가 아니고 이렇게 저렇게 하는 것, 그리고 얼마나 도는지가 아니다. 나는 수많은 다른 스타일들의 모든 것이 다 좋다. 나는 사람들이 이것들이 그저 빙산의 꼭대기 그리고 케이크위에 아주 작은 부분이라는 것을 알아차렸으면 한다. 만들 수 있는 것이 너무나도 많다. 꽃도 위에 얹힐 수 있고, 수많은 것들을 섞어서 케이크를 완성시키는 것이다. 브레이킹도 이와 유사하다.
KOREAN ROC: Where have you earned the idea of the octagon battle? Explain us about it.
옥타곤 배틀 의 아이디어 는 어디에서 얻은것인가? 옥타곤 배틀 에 대하여 설명해달라.
NESS: Octagon is original a way of me training my students. If you look at every B-boys or B-girls I have taught or trained they share two qualities they have extremely high level of control of their moves and they are all crazy dope freestylers. That’s what the Octagon promotes. It promotes freestyling, control, creativity. If you’re in an octagon you do thing you wouldn’t regularly do on a regular flat floor. The octagon brings out something different. So originally it was a way for me to just train. After a while it was brought up to me try it at the competition and it was successful and I did 7 in the states. Now I actually have 2 octagon tours running simultaneously. More people are hearing of it. I don’t care if people enter an octagon. I still suggest that they build one and practice. They gonna see more out of themselves.
Octagon(팔각형)은 원래 내가 나의 제자들을 수행시키는 방법이다. 내가 여태까지 가르치고 수행시킨 비보이나 비걸을 보면 그들은 두 가지 공통점을 갖고 있다 그들은 자신의 무브에 높은 레벨의 콘트롤을 갖고 있고 모두 멋진 freestyler들 이란거다. 이것모두 Octagon이 지지하는 것이다. Octagon은 freestyling, 조절, 창의력을 모두 지지한다. 네가 옥티곤 안에 있다면 평상시의 바닥에서 할 것들을 안 하게 된다. Octagon은 뭔가 다른 것을 갖고 나오게 한다. 그래서 원래 내 자신을 연습하는데 사용하였다. 그리고 얼마 뒤에 나에게 대회로 사용하자는 말이 있어 고 대회를 열어보니 성공적이었다. 그래서 7개의 대회를 미국에서 열었다. 그리고 이제는 2게의 Octagon 투어가 동시에 돌고 있다. 그리고 더욱 많은 사람들의 귀에 닿고 있다. 나는 솔직히 사람들이 Octagon대해에 참가하는 것에는 신경을 안 쓴다. 그런데 하나 만들어서 연습하는 것을 추천해주고 싶다. 정말 자신 안의 더 깊은 모습을 볼 수 있을 것이다.
KOREAN ROC: Could you explain how the octagon Battle or training works.
Octagon battle 이나 트레이닝이 어떻게 돌아가는지 설명 해줄 수 있는가?
NESS: Basically I would do it in steps. But I’m not going to get into that cause that’s personal. Now the octagon has few simple rules. Rule 1 you top-rock outside the octagon and you dance your way in. Rule 2 keep your move in the octagon but your not limited in it so you can jump out and jump in be creative with it. The more creative you are you gonna score more. Third rule which I think it should be a rule in every single battle, no repeat rule. Fourth rule if you knock over a cone or move a cone and disqualification. I like to joke around and say that the octagon is the first bboy sport. I think that the octagon is cleaning lot of the BS that we see happening in the breaking battles now a day. Octagon a bboy is too much focused on the octagon being creative that he ain’t got no time to step up to his opponent and touch him or trough that imaginary 2foot long dick everybody is use to seeing. It’s more creative I’m trying to make it more of a enjoyable spectator sport. Oh the crowd loves the octagon. Now I’m doing octagons in places where you would not normally have bboy. Normal clubs and Israel we did the octagon at the X-air game and it been viewed by 3, 4, 5 hundred thousand people. Dope setup in Israel. In Bulgaria programmed for the first time every TV channel covered the octagon. One channel played the whole battle from beginning to end. People wouldn’t even come they would sit home watch the octagon on TV. Shout outs to my man Boyon in Bulgaria. It just got to the point where I got a fantastic spectator sport. You know without the tasteful things, turn offs that keeping breaking at where we at now. You ain’t ever going to see a B-boy battle on ESPN. Or NBC world wide sports. Why? Look at us I use myself as an example. Look at me I’m out there like an animal uncivilized. I’m being mad vulgur being nasty. You think that they ever gonna put that on ESPN? You think you gonna see Alien Ness ever on ESPN? No it’s distasteful to the eye. I’m really trying to take away the things that are messing up the battles. When I’m saying messing up the battles because all that stuff is part of breaking. What I’m saying is the stuffs that are messing it to get up one level to the next level of competition. Breaking it can get up there get real sponsorship. You got cats that are millionaires. Filthy rich because they know how to do a few tricks on a little piece of wood with four wheels. Why? Cause it’s tasteful. There’s no vulgar. Its what people could watch corporations are lining up to have stony stalk wear their name. I mean he is a millionaire for riding a skateboard a child’s toy. Look surfboarders crazy. We should be able to have that. But why don’t we have that? Cause when these corporations look at us battling them looking at a bunch of animals. Especially when they look at me battle. They see my battle they are like ‘we ain’t gonna mess with this cat’ but the octagon is bringing something different. It’s more of a gentleman sport. There’s no time for that touching and non of that and at the same time it’s helping that same cat that will win the octagon will enter another one on one battle with no octagon and he got so much control and so much freestyle that he could go all night without repeating a move and win another battle. Why because he train for the octagon.

Octagon에는 몇 가지의 룰들이 존재한다. 첫 번째 룰, 탑락은 octagon 밖에서 하고 춤을 추면서 안으로 들어온다. 두 번째 룰, 너의 무브들은 octagon 안에서 하고 얼마나 하는지 한계는 없다 그러니 점프해서 들어갔다가 점프해서 나와도 되고, 풍부한 상상력을 발휘시켜라. 더욱더 창조적일 수록 더 많은 점수를 낼 수 있다. 세 번째 룰, 이 룰은 모든 배틀 에서의 룰이다. 반복하지 말라. 네 번째 룰, 만약 너가 octagon의 cone을 넘어트리거나 cone을 움직이면 너는 실격이다. 나는 octagon이 비보이의 첫 번째 스포츠라고 가끔 농담하고 다닌다. 내 생각에 octagon이 요즘 브레이킹 배틀 에서 생기는 실수 들을 없애주고 있는 거 같다. Octagon에서는 비보이들이 cone들에 너무 집중하고 창조적으로 보이기 위해 집중하느라 상대방에게 가서 건드리거나 상상의 60센티미터 되는 성기를 내밀지 않는다. Octagon은 보통 배틀 보다 창조적이며 나는 이것을 더욱더 관중들이 즐길만한 스포츠로 만들려고 한다. 관중들은 octagon을 정말 좋아한다. 나는 요즘 비보이를 찾기 힘든 곳들에서 octagon을 열고 있다. 보통 클럽들과 이스라엘에서 우리는 X-air game에서 octagon을 보이며 3, 4, 5십만 명들이 이것을 보게 되었다. 이스라엘에서 dope 무대였다. 불가리아에서는 처음으로 TV채널에서 octagon을 프로그래밍 해주었다. 한 채널에서는 octagon 배틀을 처음부터 끝까지 보여주었다. 그래서 사람들은 오지도 않았다. 그들은 집에 앉아서 티브이로 octagon을 봤다. 불가리아에 있는 Boyon에게 shoutout을 전한다. 내가 관중들을 위한 대단한 스포츠를 만들었다고 생각한다. 너는 ESPN에서 절대로 비보이 배틀을 보지 못할 것이고, NBC World Wide 스포츠. 왜? 우릴 봐, 나를 예를 들께. 나를 봐 나는 거기서 사회성 없는 짐승 같아. 나는 상스러우며 나쁘게 굴지. 너가 생각하기에 그런 나를 ESPN에서 방송해줄까? 너가 Alien Ness를 ESPN에서 볼 수 있을까? 아니, 다른 사람들이 보기에 흉한 거 방송 안 하겠지. 나는 정말로 배틀을 망치는 요소들을 없애려고 노력하고 있어. 내가 망친다고 얘기하는 이 모든 것들도 근데 브레이킹의 일부이지. 내가 말하고 싶은 것은 경쟁에서 다음 레벨로 올릴 수 있는 기회를 망치는 거지. 브레이킹은 한 단계 올라가서 진정한 스폰서를 받을 수 있다고 생각해. 억만장자 인간들이 얼마나 많은데. 그 인간들 네 바퀴 달린 나무 판때기에서 묘기 몇 번 한다고. 왜? 왜냐며 눈이 즐겁자 나. 상스러운 행동이 없어. 그런 것들이 사람들이 볼 만한 것들이지.
KOREAN ROC: Many bboys go through the pain of injuries and even some come to the point where they are not able to dance because of the injuries. Also when it comes to about your age, lot of bboys comes to the point of stamina problems so they don’t battle that often. But you are still doing battles and are active. Any methods you have to keep your body in shape?
많은 비보이들 이 부상에 힘들어하며 심지어 부상으로 비보잉을 그만두는 경우가 많다. 그리고 당신 정도 의 나이가 되면 비보이들은 체력적이나 여러 문제로 배틀을 하지 않는 경우가 많다. 당신은 아직도 여전히 활발히 배틀 을 하고 활동을 한다. 당신만의 몸 관리 의 노하우 등이 있는 것인가?
NESS: I’m not gonna front it hearts. I took two workshops back to back. My body was heart. I went out there I ate a meal had a nice worm drink. I feel a little better. I go back to the hotel room soak in a tub I feel a little better. I can not answer your question. Because I know in my heart I’m not suppose to do anything that I do. With how I have treated my body I don’t practice I don’t stretch I don’t eat healthy I don’t do none of that. And I’m still able to come hard and I really don’t know what it is. I can’t answer you question. I don’t know I might have a guardian angel that really likes breaking or just likes me breaking. I can’t answer your question I’ve never been injured. Never had a surgery or broken anything. The only time I get to train is when I’m doing my workshop. And I go down and show the drills and I’ll do the drills 100% just to inspire the students to go out. That’s when I get to train and get to do my stuff. Other than that I can’t answer your question. I wish I knew so I can tell everybody.
거짓말 안하고 정말 아프다. 좀 전에 2번 연속으로 워크샵을 했다. 내 몸은 정말로 죽을 거 같다. 그 후로 밖에 나가서 밥 먹고 따뜻한 음료를 먹고 나니 조금 좋아졌다. 그리고 호텔로 돌아가서 샤워를 하고 나면 더욱더 좋아질 거다. 나는 네 답에 답을 할 수 없다. 왜냐하면 내 마음에서는 내가 지금 하고 있는 것을 해서는 안된 다는 것을 알고 있다. 내가 내자신의 몸을 대한 걸로 나는 스트레치도 안하고 건강한 음식도 안 먹고 연습도 안 한다. 그런데도 이렇게 쌔게 나올 수 있다는 이유를 나는 모른다. 정말 너의 질문에 답을 할 수 없구나. 나도 모르지만 혹시 나에게 비보이를 좋아하거나 내가 춤추는 것을 좋아하는 수호천사가 있나 보다. 정말 너의 질문에 답을 할 수 없다. 부상 당한 적도 없고 수술이나 어디 부서진 적이 없다. 내가 연습하게 될 때는 내가 워크샵을 할 때뿐이다. 워크샵을 할 때는 하나하나 힘을 줘서 나에게 배우는 학생들이 자극을 받고 하도록 나는 100%가량으로 한다. 그 외로는 너에게 답할게 없다. 나도 솔직히 알았으면 좋겠다. 그러면 모두에게 말을 할 텐데 말이야.
KOREAN ROC: From the long time you have spent in the bboying scene you must have seen the changes. What differences are there between the present bboys and the past bboys?
오랜 시간 비보잉신에 살아오며 많은 변화를 경험하셨을 텐데요. 예전 비보이 들 과 현시대 비보이들의 마인드 나 틀린 점 이 있다면 말씀해주세요.
NESS: Well in the mentality B-boy has been a misconception of what the breaking mentality is or should be. I’ve been knocked a lot being cocky rude stuff like that. For you to knock me for doing that definitely do not understand what the dance is about. So that to me is the most drastic change. People’s approach to the dance. The original bboys did it to show off. Than down the line they started battling each other. They wanted to be the best. Simple as that. You want to be the best on the block and you want to be the best in your hood and you want to be the best in your city. That what it was all about. Now the whole cockiness and arrogance that’s part of the game. And I think that is missing in today’s game. People don’t really don’t understand that part. If they don’t understand that part they can’t bring the same heat and intensity as the bboys from the original generation. Trac 2 told me a story about one time his cousin took him to another neighborhood. They were at a jam and his cousin was bragging about Trac. One guy walked up to him and said ‘you B-boy?’ and he went ‘yeah’ and he asked Trac ‘you think you can beat Trac 2?’ and Trac went ‘Yeah’ It wasn’t a matter. Even though they didn’t know each other there was the arrogance and Trac would have answered the same way. It’s just Ironic that the guy mentioned Trac 2. To me it was one of the funniest story that Trac ever told me. But that’s there the part of aggression that anger. That need to be the best and smoke someone. You know lot of people knock me for that. But you know what I get loved from the originators they see me and say ‘Your doing it the way its gotta be done.’ I’m happy with that. I’m gonna keep pushing to the limit. But I think that is what is really missing. That’s the difference in the mentality. I don’t mean you gotta go cocky or arrogant all the time. You got to learn how to turn it on and turn it off. But when you in that cipher and you step in the battle even an organized battle. If I’m judging a battle and you in that battle you gotta make me believe you know you’re the best. You gotta make me believe that. On top of showing me a hundred moves to last a battle to smoke your opponents you really got to show me that you know you gonna win. I’ve seen breakers just win battles just off their character. Just how they carry themselves.
비보이들은 사상이 어떻게 되어야 하고 사상에 대해서 잘못 알고 있다. 나는 많은 사람들한테 내가 거칠다는 것에 많이 욕을 먹었다. 나를 태클하는 사람들은 정말 이 춤에 대해서 이해를 하지 못하는 사람들이다. 그럼으로 이것이 나에게 가장 큰 변화이다. 사람들이 이 춤을 어떻게 다가가는 것이 말이다. 오리지널 비보이들은 자신들을 뽐내기 위해서 했다. 그러면서 서로 배틀을 하게 되었다. 그들은 서로 최고가 되기를 원했다. 정말 간단하게 말이다. 너의 거리에서 최고가 되는 것으로 시작해 마을, 그리고 도시로 최고가 되려고 한다. 모든 게 최고가 되기 위한 거였다. 이제는 그 자신감과 거만함이 이 모든 것의 일부가 되었다. 그러나 요즘의 시대에 이것이 빠져있는 것 같다. 사람들은 그것에 대해서 정말로 이해를 하고 있지 않다. 이해를 못한다면 그 오리지널 세대의 댄서들이 전달하는 크기와 열기를 전달할 수 없다. Trac 2가 전에 나에게 자기의 삼촌이 이웃하는 지역에 대려 갔을 때의 이야기를 해주었는가. 그들은 잼에서 놀고 있었는데 삼촌이 Trac에 대해서 자랑을 하고 있었다. 한 사람이 Trac 2에게 다가가서 '너 비보이야?' 물어봐서 답을 했지 '어' 그래서 트랙에게 물어봤다 '너 Trac 2 이길 수 있을 거 같나?' 그래서 Trac 이 답했지 '어' 정말 그에게는 신경도 안 쓰일 일이었다. 아무리 서로를 모르고 있었더라도 그의 자신감은 똑같았을 것이다 그리고 Trac은 같은 답을 내놓았을 것이고 말이다. 그저 그 사람이 Trac 2를 언급한 게 정말 반전이었다. 나에게는 정말 Trac이 말해준 이야기 중에서 가장 웃긴 이야기다. 그러나 그 이야기 안에서 그 시대의 그 거침과 화나있는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 가장 최고가 되어서 누군가를 스모크 해야겠다는 필요성을 말한다. 알다시피 많은 사람들이 그것 때문에 나를 갖고 걸고 넘어진다. 그러나 알고 있는 지 모르겠지만 나는 정말 오리지널 사람들에게 많은 사랑을 받는다. 그들은 나에게 '네가 하는 게 정말 사람들이 해야 할 방향이다'라고 말해준다 이것만으로 나는 만족한다. 나는 계속해서 한계를 밀어 올릴 것이다. 그러나 그것이 내가 정말 생각했을 때 빠져있는 요소다. 정말 사상에서의 차이이다. 항상 자만하고 cocky하게 다니라는 게 아니다. 그것을 네가 알아서 조절 할 줄 알아야 한다는 거다 그 성향을 킬 때가 있고 끌 수가 있어야 한다. 그러나 네가 싸이퍼나 배틀에 나갔을 때 내가 심사한다면 네가 많은 무브를 보여주기 이전에 너 자신이 이긴다는 확신과 자신감을 보여 주어야 한다. 나는 캐릭터 만으로 배틀들을 이긴 브레이커들을 봐왔다. 그저 자신들을 어떻게 이끄냐 그것이다.
KOREAN ROC: Any memorable moments that you had in the bboying scene?
비보잉 신에서 가장 기억에 남은 때가 언제인가?
NESS: I think to me the most memorable things or thing is the fact that I’ve been able to dance with all my inspirations. I went from a little kid watching flash dance and New York City Breakres and Rock Steady Crew and Beatstreet to actually performing with these people. I shared the stage with Legs rocked with Ken swift. I shared the stage with Trac 2 at the Rock Steady anniversary. We did our Rock Steady show case Trac 2 came out. Bang that’s another one on my list rock with Trac 2. Fable, Wiggles, all my inspirations I got to rock with these people. That to me is the most important thing to me. That’s like a guitar player being asked to play with his favorite band. You know what I mean. You will never forget the day they asked them to play with the band. For me that has been the best thing about my life. That I could say I managed to rock with all my heroes. In one point or another I did my thing with the people that I looked up to. All the people I use to bite from when I was young. People I use to idolize you know what I was rocking right side by side with them. To me that’s the best thing that I’ve done. To me the most important.
내가 가장 기억에 남는 일들이나 일은 그저 내게 춤의 영향을 준 사람들과 출 수 있었다는 점이다. 나는 어린아이로서 Flashdance, New York City Breakers, Rock Steady Crew, Beatstreet을 보면서 자라왔는데 실질적으로 이 사람들과 한 무대를 서게 되었다. 나는 Legs와 춤을 췄고 Ken swift와 무대도 섰다. Trac 2와 Rock Steady 기념일에 같이 무대에 섰다. 우리가 Rock steady 쇼캐이스를 할 때 Trac 2가 뛰어나왔다. 그 순간 바로 내가 살면서 한 일의 명단에 Trac 2와 함께 했다는 게 더해졌다. Fable, Wiggles, 그리고 모든 나의 영웅들 사람들과 직접 춤을 추었다. 이것이 나에게는 가장 중요했다. 이것은 기타리스트가 자신이 가장 좋아하는 밴드가 와서 함께 연주하자는 일과 같다. 이게 얼마나 큰일인지는 알 것이다. 너는 너에게 다가와 함께하자는 그 날을 잊을 수 없을 것이다. 이것이 나에게는 가장 최고의 일이었다. 한 측면으로 보나 다른 측면으로 보나 내가 한때 위로 바라보던 사람들과 했을 때 난 내가 해야 할 춤을 하였다. 내가 어렸을 때 바이트 하던 사람들 모두. 내가 머릿속으로 항상 그리던 사람과 바로 옆에서 춤을 추게 되었다. 그것이 나에게는 가장 최고의 일이다. 가장 중요한 일이었다.
KOREAN ROC: In the 80’s bboying went in to a slump why do you think this happened?
80년대 중반에 비보잉이 가라 앉았는데 왜 그런 상황이 발생했다고 생각하는가?
NESS: The media, you got to remember the whole breaking market was controlled by the media. So you have a breaking market controlled by the media. Media is going to treat breaking market as same as they treat everything else. What they think they can’t get anything out they are going to move on to the next. So in the 80’s the whole breaking market was controlled by the media. And that’s what really killed breaking when the media had no more interest that’s what killed breaking.
언론이 브레이킹 시장을 조정했다는 것을 기억해야 한다. 그 것을 기억하고 생각하면 언론은 브레이킹을 다른 모든 것과 똑같이 생각할 것이다. 흥미가 달고 더 이상 창출해낼게 없으면 버리고 다음 걸로 넘어간다. 그렇지 80년대에 브레이킹 전체가 언론에 의해 조정 당했지. 그리고 이것이 브레이킹 자체를 정말로 죽인 것이다. 언론이 더 이상 브레이킹에 흥미를 잃었을 때 말이다.
KOREAN ROC: We worry that Korea is gonna go through the same process as the States did in the 80s. Any advices you want to give?
한국의 힙합문화가 80년대에 미국의 상황을 겪게 될 까봐 걱정이 된다, 조언을 해달라!
NESS: This situation can never happen again. Not in Korea, Not in N.W. you know why we’re in charge of that market. We’re doing our own events. Yeah we’re using sponsors but we can’t get a sponsor to open a big event we’re gonna throw small jams. We’re putting out our own videos and cds. Now we’re controlling of the sponsors now. I don’t think it’s possible for that to happen again. Before those bboys were kids being spoon fed. Once they stoped being spoon fed they went hungry. Now we’re feeding ourselves. You got brothers like Cross One doing huge events, John J in Korea R-16, B-boy unit, Battle of the year that’s ours we’re doing that stuff. And if the media don’t cover it who cares we’re gonna open it. I doubt that it will ever happen again. As long as people out there still giving out an outlet. These events, Jams, workshops now we’re control. Can’t die no more. I don’t think it’s capable of happening again. Unless every breaker in the world just quits breaking.
이러한 상황은 다시는 오지 않는다. 한국에서도 New York에서도 일어나지 않는다. 이유는 간단히 이제 우리가 그 시장을 조정하기 때문이다. 우리가 우리만의 이벤트를 연다. 우리가 스폰서를 쓰기는 하지만 큰 대회를 열기 위한 스폰서를 받지 못하는 경우라도 우리는 자그마한 대회라도 열 것이다. 우리의 비디오와 CD를 출판하고 있다. 이제 우리가 솔직히 스폰서를 조정하기도 한다. 그래서 나는 다시는 일어나지 않을 것이라고 나는 생각한다. 그 옛날의 비보이들은 떠먹여진0 어린 비보이였다. 떠먹여주지 않을 경우 굶어 죽는다. 그러나 이제 우리가 우리 자신을 먹여 살린다. Cross One같은 큰 대회를 여는 사람, 한국의 R-16 John J, 비보이유닛, Battle of the year 이것은 우리의 것이다 우리가 한 것이다. 그리고 언론에서 취재나 관심을 갖지 않는다면 어떠냐 우리는 행사를 계속 진행할 것이다. 그래서 그런 일이 생길 거라는 의심은 하지도 않는다. 계속해서 사람들이 우리를 찾아주고 계속 설 자리가 있으면 말이다. 그리고 우리가 우리의 위치에서 잘 조정하는 것 또한 같다. 정말 다시 일어날 경우는 딱 하나다 모든 비보이들이 한 순간 다 그만두는 일 외에는 이런 일은 다시는 일어나지 않을 것이다.
KOREAN ROC: What do you think about the Korean b-boys?
한국 비보이들 에 대하여 어떻게 생각하는가?
NESS: I always knew Korean bboys were dope. You got your internet clips you read about stuff. You get your understanding of what is dope where it’s at. But actually being here I’ve seen some…. I quit breaking. I wouldn’t want to break no more. I’ve seen this kid hit three air-flares on one elbow. I just got to say that everybody else got to step up their game. Especially if they want to do power you all have to step up your game after what I saw yesterday for real.
나는 한국 비보이들이 잘한다는 것은 항상 알고 있었다. 너희들은 너의 인터넷 영상들을 보고 그것에 관한 글도 읽어 보는 것도 알고 잇다. 멋있는 것을 이해하고 그것이 어디에서 나온 건지도 알게 될 것 이다. 그런데 여기 와서 실제로 보니까 정말….나 브레이킹 관둘래 라는 생각이 들었다. 어린애가 한쪽 팔꿈치로 air-flare를 세 바퀴 하는 것을 봤다. 정말 내가 할말은 하나다 모두가 분발해야 할 것이다. 특히 파워무브를 하려면 자신의 능력을 분발해서 늘려야 한다. 어제 본 걸로는 나는 이말밖에 못한다.
KOREAN ROC: Any words to the present bboys and up coming bboys?
현시대 비보이 들 과 새로 시작하는 어린 비보이들 에게 해줄 조언은!
NESS: Keep rocking man. If you can believe you can achieve just look at me. 2Pac once said that in a song and that became my tag line. I’ve gone from South Bronx to selling drugs to Jail to traveling all over the world because of breaking. It’s not because I’m special It’s just because I’m a breaker and I did a certain way it open up doors. That could be anybody. If it weren’t for me it would have been the next man. The only way you can get there is to keep doing what you doing. Try your best ability to do it as proper as you can. When I’m saying proper I mean being true to the game of what the dance is about and being as original as you can. But as long as you keep rocking man sky is the limit. Don’t stop rocking.
계속 춤을 춰라. ‘If you can believe, you can achieve, just look at me’(네가 믿는다면 너는 얻을 수 있다 나를 보면 알 수 있을 것이다.). 이 소절은 2Pac의 노래중의 가산데 이게 내인생의 tag line이 되었다. 나는 South Bronx에서부터 마약 거래, 감옥, 에서 세상을 돌아 다니게 되었다 모든 게 이 breaking때문이다. 내가 특별해서가 아니라 내가 어떠한 방법으로 하였기 때문에 내 주변에 기회들이 연린 것뿐이다. 이런 자리에 있을 수 있는 사람은 아무나 될 수 있다. 내가 아니었다면 그 다음 사람이었을 거다. 그 자리까지 올라가기 위한 방법은 하나다. 네가 하고 있는 일을 계속 해서 하는 것이다. 정말 최대한 제대로 되게 하려고 노력해야 한다. 내가 제대로 라고 할 때 말하는 것은 이 춤에 대한 진실된 것을 말한다 그리고 그것은 최대한 네 자신을 오리지널 하게 하는 것이다. 그런대 계속 춤만 춘다면 하늘이 제안이다(제한이 없다라는 뜻인 듯싶다). 그러니 춤추기를 멈추지 말아라.
KOREAN ROC: What is your next goal?
당신의 다음목표 는 무엇입니까?
NESS: I have so many things I’m doing. I have the art of battle dropping. I got another book I’m working on which is ‘Jesus was a bboy’ ‘blueprint 2’ my final DVD ‘untitled’ and I fell in love with Korea I probably find me a Korea wife and move in to Korea start teaching classes out here. And drink lots of Soju. But I have a lot of things I want to do and always thinking of a new skim so expect a lot from me.
정말 많은 일들을 하고 있다. 이제 곧 Art of Battle도 해야 하고. 그리고 새로운 책을 작성하고 있는데 제목은 ‘Jesus was a bboy’ 그리고 내 DVD들 ‘Blue print 2’그리고 나의 마지막 작품인 ‘untitled’. 그리고 한국에 정말 큰 사랑과 애착이 들어서 한국 부인을 만들어서 한국에 들어와 소주도 마시고 스쿨도 해야 할거 같다. 그런대 정말 하고 싶은 것들이 많고 계속해서 새로운 찾고 있으니 많은 기대해라.
